LadyGriz Nate Harris Cuts

So why is Nate Harris cleaning the team to the bones?… he is the problem not the girls HE kept in the first place. Just because we are getting revenue shares added in doesn’t mean he should be cutting everyone. Thoughts everyone??

I hope this doesn't come off as condescending because it isn't, I'm genuinely curious in your opinion.

In perfect world what would you expect a coach who just went 9-22 to do?
He doesn’t have the credibility to recruit the high level players in the portal. If I was in the portal and he reached out I wouldn’t be thrilled due to their last season. Watching his coaching style in games also is a huge red flag for girls I would assume

Oh my lord. We are here again! Gruntled fans or parents. Disgruntled even.

First, I know for certain that prior coaches (including Holsinger) made cuts. Remember that Hoops spent four years eviscerating Holsinger for cutting Montana kids including Momberg. I also know that this team was given notice and it wasn't like this was a tightly held secret that roster changes were coming. Maybe they were surprised as to who was told to accept different roles, but I've heard enough to know this wasn't a surprise.

Second, it doesn't take much of a trained eye to know this roster wasn't talented enough to win games. They worked hard, but it wasn't a very complete group and missing a ton of pieces. Most of those girls, unfortunately got caught in what has been a rather unchecked dumpster fire within the women's program going back at least 10 years. I'm sorry that they got caught in it.

Third, no self-respecting Division 1 basketball coach who was given very clear directions by administration to do x,y, and z is going to stand pat on a team who won 4 games in conference and got boat raced by your in-state rival by a bajillion points this year. If Harris doesn't doesn't respond with a sense of urgency based upon how the season went, they continue to get waxed by Bozeman on and off the floor, he's not the guy to rebuild the program if he can't see the gap between UM and MSU on the floor is longer than the distance in miles between the schools.

Fourth, as a person who has been around the program and watched since my days in elementary school in the 80's, this isn't what older fans expect of this program. That isn't the reason why any program should do anything, but as a 50 year old, would never have considered in my wildest dreams as a 10, 20 or even 30 year old that we'd be talking about the womens program being a mediocre at best team the Big Sky. Harris was put into a bad position and has to make tough decisions if he wants to get this program heading in the right direction. Hard to know after a year of an incomplete roster that was a product of the continuing dumpster fire. I don't know yet if Harris has the chops to figure this out, but he isn't going to do it being saddled with legacy issues. I get that sounds harsh, but I am tired of watching this team 'compete,' but not actually turn the corner. The only way this happens is he and others within the athletic department are willing to reassess and recalculate. That means that girls might be asked to recalculate whether they are willing to accept smaller roles and see the writing on the wall. Is it unethical? In 1990 maybe, but we are in 2026 and the landscape of college basketball is a million times more cutthroat than it was then. These girls are paying for not only Harris's mistakes, but a whole bunch of people who aren't around the program anymore. But at some point this program has to stop the free-fall and some of it has to be the realization that Holsingers philsophy didn't work in as much as Schweyens didn't either. Harris has to make his mark on the program. I hope he does things in the right way, but as a coach who made the choice once or twice to carry on traditions and legacy practices and not do things that were the best reflection of who I was, I'll give Harris the benefit of the doubt for seeing that he had to do things his own way. Bout the only way he'll be successful and consequently the program.

I wish them all the luck. Really I do. I do think it is unfortunate they got caught in the cross-fire.

I think if you read this board a lot, many posters think the majority of the team should be replaced. Athleticism needs to be improved a lot.

But, Harris has a right to do with the team as he wants to. He has the length of his contract to show his progress.
He has been a coach for a long time and he knows these girls. The problem isn’t them at that point. He’s not a brand new coach

Yes, I know. Assistant coach for quite a while, including at MSU. Head coach at Angelo State for 2 years which one year was lost due to covid. Of course he knows the girls. Likely he knows that many of the players aren't athletic enough and talented enough to compete well with MSU and Idaho. Grizfan-24 hit the nail on that in post above.

But his recruiting policies, his program philosophy are all different. I get being frustrated that players we like/love might being asked to accept a different path. But the standards and expectations that he was given by administration are pretty black and white. He doesn't have the leash (5 or 6 years) to let the whole squad reset itself.

Anybody who's upset about Harris making roster cuts after only winning 9 games this year, which is objectively one of the worst seasons in LG History, is either delusional or mad their kid got cut. I admire that Harris has the guts to make the wholesale changes to not have a repeat of the season we just had. Good for him! He recognizes the issues and is going to try to rectify it.

The question remains who did he cut and where can we find the cut list?
The information is coming from a new poster who appears to be getting his/her info from rumors. So, unlikely to find a cut list. I am not going to be discounting it because after a season they had, it would be expected to have some changes. This is actually the second worst season since Selvig retired. The first was Shannon's first year as head coach (Kayleigh Valley injury was significant that season so may not consider Shannon's first year as bad as current season).

Waddington and Ehrman are the only two I would support keeping. Honestly if he got rid of everybody else, I would not be upset about that. I would actually applaud him for having to make the difficult but necessary decisions to get the program back on track.

Of the 2 mentioned, I actually think Ehrman would be the player I would miss the most. She was lady griz's best shooter as a true freshman with a lot of upside to her game. She can shoot from anywhere and needs to be on a team that get her more open shots

After a tough season Harris has to turn things pretty quick or his tenure is over. So that part is understandable regarding his approach to this. He seems like a good guy and I’m sure it was difficult for him to let some of these players go. I feel for the players also. It’s a tough deal. D1 is pretty cut throat.

According to Nuanez, only six coming back. Waddington, Land, Schubert, Gillette, Ehrman, and Cossette
If that is correct, at least Ehrman and Waddington will be back. Hopefully Schubert will shoot as well as she did her first season here. Wonder who left because Harris cut them or they chose to leave on their own. May never know. Looks like only one starter that won't be back.
