Trump to issue new sports/NIL executive order soon

I think the pay is a little ridiculous though. Money is the root of all evil, like yes it's a commitment and sacrifice to be on a sports team; they already get so many extra privileges as a student. As someone that has now been on both sides of the college experience, athlete and regular student, I can say on at least my behalf, that a lot of grizzlies sports privileges make up for some of the cost. I think if they were payed the base amount that a student employee is paid across all sports , that would be a fair an equitable solution to the whole of the student body. For example be basketball players get very very very lucky with their housing every year, but the regular student is sol or another example a griz athlete can park on campus and most likely won't get fined.
The pay is not ridiculous. They deserve every penny they get.

Trump, you always tell athlete's to :just play and stay out politics", so why don't you stay out of sports and take care of your own little presidential problems. Think you have enough on your stupid plate.
For Christ's sake, everyone at that meeting said Trump is the only one that could pull that group together. You're right, he has much more importanat things on his plate but he stepped forward to do what he could to help fix this mess to include an Executive Order, which he knows will be challened in court. But he is trying. Lets leave it up to the Democrats to solve it and see how that works out. Statements like this are plain BS. Who's making it political?

Why should non-professional and non-employees get paid for playing in college-sponsored athletics? Makes no sense to me. So what if some football programs
bring in good money? I don’t get the connection of bringing in money to requiring payment to players in a non-business situation. If the mission of universities is to make money from sports and pay some athletes, then the money brought in from athletics should be fully taxed.

I have always thoughts that smaller benefits should br okay. Dinner, drinks, tattoos. Local
ads. Some payment for jerseys and gear.

The current system is skewing sports and teams, goofing up college sports and taking money from running fun and worthwhile non-revenue sports.

If some players and people want a mini-professional league, separate that from universities or at least tax it.

Regular students can transfer and do but they don’t get paid, or paid NIL, for it.

Correct. So, is it strange to say athletes getting NIL deals are just students and should be held to the same rules? Are they students? Are they pro athletes? I don’t know. Seems like the classification we want to give them depends on which restrictions we would like to place on them.

It's called Multitasking!

Is Gillman more important and deserving of higher pay than the UM president or top professors because he helps the football team win and bring in lots of money? Is he more importantly than the governor? I’m getting back to not understand connections some of you are making.

For what it's worth, 39 of the 50 states agree that sports at their universities is the most important. In those 39 states, the highest paid state employee is a football coach or a basketball coach. Montana is not one if them though.

I think a union for college athletes should be encouraged.

Agree. Neither should Bobby Kennedy or Travis. I hope college athletics are salvageable. All blame lays on the NCAA though. After O’Bannon decision they should have become more proactive with solutions. Why not at this point encourage athletes to form a union that negotiate on behalf of the collective group? That’s a question not a statement. It’s seems as though athletes have become more powerful in this equation and the only solution over non stop lawsuits would be to give them a seat at the table.

I saw someone on Tenth Avenue South during rush hour on Friday who was multitasking, talking on the phone, eating rice with chop sticks, keeping his kids under control while the dog jumped from seat to seat. Didn't look very efficient. I stayed out of his way.
