Now Things Get Complicated

Consider what else comes from those posters (and those cat fans).

Kent may be many things. Being a pos would rank roughly 11,7820,812,008,115,651,776,154,054,655th on that list.
Hey that’s fair. I didn’t go back and read all of the posts. Just kinda jumped out at me as something that has been said recently. Was just curious if that was the line of thinking and I guess it’s not. Maybe just a handful of people.

It is definitely not how people generally feel about him. Kent is warm and a very kind man. People can criticize his job performance if they want, but anybody claiming he is somehow a POS or bad person just doesn't know anything about the man. Some people get on Egriz and attack people they don't know at all, but don't let that cloud your opinion of him as a person.

Completely fair Elrod.

Like I said I heard some unflattering things about him a few years ago but disregarded it because of the source. Cat boosters who I personally love but also know well enough to know their vision is a bit cloudy with anything griz related. lol.

So reading a couple comments on here recently I was more just asking. Like I said, even after the Hauck press conference I wouldn’t be able to pick the man out of a lineup. Literally don’t think I’ve ever seen him. Definitely don’t have an opinion.

Was more just curious if the recent mumblings represented griz nation or if these sentiments are shared by just a few. Reading what you and EG said it sounds like maybe it’s just a small minority unhappy with him and that’s good enough for me!

Very easy to talk with. He would listen. Sometimes agree other times disagree. If I left without knowing a direction he was going with a decision, when it was made his explanation would explain how he came to it and thank me for my input. Can't say that about others. I am a GRIZ but also worked with MSU 😉 as well as other Universities.

I keep coming back to 2002 and wondering how different things might’ve looked if Montana had actually hired Brian Kelly back then. He was a legit finalist, and if he’d landed the job instead of Hauck, does the entire trajectory of Griz football change? Do we get a more explosive offense earlier? Different recruiting pipelines? Maybe even a different run of playoff results in the mid‑2000s?

Not saying it would’ve been better or worse—just wild to think about how one December decision over twenty years ago might’ve altered everything that came after.
And to think Brian Kelly won two D2 National Championships. I wonder what it would be like to hire a head coach who has won five D2 National Championships.

Great, successful on the field coach. His issues off the field, in practices, and treatment of players not excellent. We do not like how Hauck left, Brian left town, South Bend, similarly

First, all the Hauck brothers haters should now be satisfied. Both gone along with the entire defensive coaches responsible for the dreaded 3-3-5. The slate is clean. So now the dilemma that Haslam most likely never thought through. How do you hire a completely new defensive staff on a one year contract with spring football right around the corner? Who wants to sign up for that? Probably add to that a strength and conditioning coach as well. If I’m Haslam, I would be looking for a head coach in waiting that can provide a smooth transition should Kennedy not be renewed. This assures a contract extension and makes a great hire easier.

This whole situation is a result of Hauck’s contract not being extended in my opinion. Winningest coach in Montana and Big Sky history, 13 wins, over 20,000 season tickets sold ( more than WSU and every Mountain West team), almost 25,000 average attendance which is Haslam’s lifeblood, highest team gpa and graduation rates. And you’re told, “ no extension, let’s see how the last year of your contract goes “. Another way of saying, “I can’t fire you now without paying you for your last year”. So why is everyone so pissed when Bobby retired and then turns around and immediately takes a new job without owing a buyout? Isn’t it the same type of posturing? I think Haslam is absolutely relived that he didn’t have to make any tough decisions. Bobby made them for him. Who cares when the decision was made to go to Illinois. And taking his defensive staff…good for all of them. More salary and opportunities. And bringing Bradford along is a very smart move.
Now we wait. Kent, it’s your move. Think it through, buddy.

I’ve heard he’s a POS but that came from a couple big Cat boosters so I just kinda took it with a grain of salt. But yours is like the 3rd comment I’ve now heard from griz fans, including a former player that implies the same.
Haslem is an incredible slimeball. He gets other members of the AD to do the behind the scenes stuff so it cant come back to him. They have been on the phone a lot the last few days prying info, asking people to tone it down and not be vocal. I have watched this for years and its always amazed me how unbecoming it is. Its gross and really really scummy. Hes the ultimate yes man to your face then stabs people in the back

Yeah, that jives with the fact that the vast majority of the athletic department staff have all been there his entire tenure.

Wait.

In reality, at the moment Hauck was hired the second time this was never going to end well. He was a good coach, not great but good. However he was a petulent, narcisistic bully who had to rule the roost. He had to have known after the first Cat loss that he wasn't going to get an extension. He could have retired then but I suppose, in fairness, the thought he could salvage something. He put Haslem in a no win situation and it essentially it went down how it went down. If he had retired earlier many would have said that it would ruin recruiting which it well might have. Many of you seemed to want him coach for life but essentially this had to happen some time and it never would have been pretty because he is an asshole. Personally I find cleaning house, including the coaching staff, to be the best possible outcome. Coach K (no not that one) may turn out just fine - will go 9 and 3 with a home playoff win easily. Maybe he will continue on maybe he won't. This was inevitable because so many of you turned Hauck in to a cult figure which is your fault and no one elses. Kind of echoes another situation going on in the world today.

Probably have 3 to 4 more championship trophies

Yes. This is a perfect example of his treatment of players.

FWIW, Trinidad Chambliss was more congratulatory of Tony Annese's impact on him than he was of Montana's stadium and game day experience and we know how everyone was drooling over Trinidad's comments about playing in WaGriz.

As I recall, he used UM to get a much better contract back in Michigan where all his recruiting ties were. I don’t think he ever really intended to take the job at UM. Jim o’day would know. Some call Bobby a narcissist…he pales compared to Brian Kelley. And don’t forget, Kelley left his Cincinnati Bearcats right before they were going to the playoffs to take the Notre Dame job. He’s never had loyalty to anyone but himself. Some on this board would be unforgiving of that. Others would say opportunities only come along once. And so it goes.

The vast majority of Bobby Hauck’s players love him when they are done playing. The same can’t be said for Brian Kelly.
