Did Hauck have the Illinois job when he announced his retirement?

Exactly. Plus he gets sued if he doesnt retire first. He may still get sued according to Schmidt.
Why would he get sued, and for what? I've looked the contract. Schmidt isn't a business lawyer, and he's probably clueless about contractual law. And what's the damage even if he had talked to Illinois first. Do you think they would offer him the job before he retired from UM?

So when Bret Bielema described the exact defense that his new DC was going to run on February 4, he hadn't talked to Bobby?

What was said on Feb. 4. Bobby announced his retirement on Feb. 4, so Ill would have known that before this press conference, I assume.

He seemed to say he "knew what direction he was going" with D and a bit more. On ST, he said he knew what he was doing there. He wants to go away to a different scheme. He later said that he knew some time ago that he wanted to change the D scheme. And that's why they didn't care as much about some guys leaving. He also said, to a question, that he at first planned to run the D scheme change himself, I think.

I also think that what likely happened was that when he saw Bobby was retiring, he called him right away. He said he always has 3 or so coaches in mind for every position. And that he gets 50 calls about DC every time he's had to replace a DC.

But, I see what you mean, tho, to some extent.

Feel free to post the quotes.

He was an agent wasnt he? so I assume he knows a little about contracts? But I dont know.

I heard they were going to hire an assistant from the Seahawks until they won the Super Bowl and he changed his mind and Bielema scrambled to fill it by reaching out to an old friend and respected coach.

The Ill coach said he knew of like 50-75 (or 75-100) Ivy players that they knew wouldn't be able to play next year due to the Ivy rule prohibiting playing after graduation. He said he went to 2 Ivy games to watch, after getting approval from the Big Ten. Interesting.

I wouldn't assume that. Other than helping Colt, did he ever do anything of note? I don't know. He wasn't a lawyer then. How much do you want to bet on whether Bobby gets sued by UM? Again, what would the damages be? Moving expenses for the new coach?

Why would UM sue Bobby? The damage to their reputation from suing a coach is far greater than what they could gain from the last year of his contract with him already forgoing his salary. It makes no sense.

Not that it matters, but I believe he had talked with Bielema prior to resigning as head coach.

Edit to say that it was probably through his agent.
I don't agree, but don't know. I do know what Bobby said in a shorter and a long conversion with one of my friends (and Bobby's good friend) the night before he resigned, and the day he resigned (no hint of a college or Ill job). Why would Bielema reach out to Bobby before Bobby resigned? How would he know Bobby was resigning? 5280 just posted that he'd heard Ill was looking at a Seahawks coach.

Free rent for a year 😂

I also don't believe BH was going to take it or even offered the job until this last weekend. I had heard that there was a verbal agreement with another coach that fell through.
