Links / convo: the 2025 season "autopsy" pod

Good pod so far. Clearly hard enough for fans to not get wrapped up in emotion from what I’m listening to. I’m sure the staff at time struggles with the same thing as well as a reactionary mentality like the pod and fanbase has.

For the first 5 years of Bobby’s tenure it was the defense and special teams winning games. Legitimately, I’ve never seen so many games won by breaking kick returns, blocking kicks, forcing pick sixes or turnovers. We clamored for years “oh what we could do with even a semi competent QB and offense”

Now we finally have a QB, RB, receiving corps and the defense is sub par. We blast the 3-3-5 base and scheme ad nauseam after 24’ and 25’.

Would this same autopsy podcast at the end of 22’ gotten us to the exact same point we are at now? I think so.

Instead we need long term planning and vision. If that long term plan isn’t improving facilities, increasing recruitment, competing at the highest level in research, athletics and academics, but just maintaining the status quo then what is the point. Mike hit on this and I’m glad to hear there are people with ideas. It needs to be transmitted to all of griz nation though. No idea too big or small.

Maybe they should hire alumni and Montanans that have a true passion and understanding of Griz athletics. That’s one of the reasons Keaton is good at his job. However, they don’t seem to see the logic or value in that within marketing. Instead, you do an unpaid internship for 9 months and don’t get a single opportunity after. Connect with those that will put everything they have into the university. Do something different. Be different. Find those that want to put this university on a different level!!

Thats a question for the person donating their hard earned money, and maybe they see it the way you present (griz under Hauck have come close before)….and that if we just keep blindly giving money to Bobby and Kent to spend…and hope they will make those adjustments, which have been apparent for years, needed to win the big games.

Or, you could take the position that Luke pondered during the pod, which I’ve felt as well. Which is, if there are flaws that are deal breakers for you personally, such as a culture that silences any attempt at outreach, and a coach that lashes out at local media sources like a child, then don’t give. Money is tight enough for anyone as it is.

Honestly, more than the wins and the title, what I envy most about the cats recent success is how fun and inclusive they make it to be a fan of that team. Colter getting interviews with 6 players, both coordinators, and the HC…while we offer only a sullen bob hauck….is distasteful. Your pod hit the nail on the head with the position that the team needs to do a better job of helping fans not just put faces to names, but putting PERSONALITIES to names and faces. I don’t know who Roger cooper is or why he wants to coach here, I could say the same about every other coach and most players on the roster.
 
Listened to the first half of the pod. Good content. What stands out to me are words like old school, denial, failure to adapt, entitled. The whole athletic department needs to either get in line or be cleaned out. It is simply amazing how some of the baby boomers and old school fans are protecting mediocrity and that’s “good enough”. Coach Hauck is getting a major pass. Haslam is getting a major pass. Bodnar needs to do his job or go run for political office. (He will get trounced by the way).

The message that the current thinking and attitude of this Athletic Department (University) is not acceptable needs to be sent out as strongly as possible. To the BOR, the next President, the next AD.

We need to play it safe? Why? Because past administrators allowed some bullshit rape narrative to evolve and destroy UM?

You appear to have no clue what the current thinking and attitude of the Athletic Department is.

Funding is going to be our issue down the stretch to keep up with the neighbors. There is more money than god in the area. The rich people that once were 2 week visitors are becoming permanent fixtures. They now have kids in the local schools and want to be part of the community. Griz nation has a great fan base and good people donating what they can but aside from the generous Washington family I don’t see us keeping up.

Just because there’s rich people moving in to the area doesn’t mean they’re gonna donate to the cats. That’s a flawed way of thinking.

But they are donating. Thousands flocked to Bozeman during COVID from all over the country. Don't tell me that a high percentage of those kids aren't going to school at MSU when you look at enrollment of instate, and even local kids.

Even someone doesn't have a tie to MSU, they want to fit into the community. And in Bozeman, the community means MSU. If you want to fit in, you become a Bobcat fan. Especially, when they are good. Call them bandwagon fans, but they are still fans. I know plenty of people that got season tickets after moving here. Don't have any ties to the school, other than they now live in Bozeman. And MSU makes it easy to be a fan. They provide tons of access, stories, and videos for their fans. The guys on the pod mentioned "earned media". Well, MSU is milking their past five years of success, and especially this year's, for all the earned media it can. That is going to translate into $$ from the hard core long-time fans and the recent additions.

I don't think it is flawed to believe that with the influx of money moving into the Bozeman area that is opens more pathways for donations to the athletic department. It would only require a few to make a difference.
