What We Can Do As Griz Fans

Hoops do you think 2~8 against the Cats in a decade is acceptable?
I look at overall record and playoffs. I don’t care about just one piece. Yes, 13-2 is acceptable. Give me 3, 84 and Harper and we win the game. Change one play and we probably win the game.

You can quit on the team. I won’t.
This schtick is getting old. Nobody is quitting! We are asking for better. We want Bobby to recognize a problem and FIX IT.

You do you. If losing to the cats every year and not meeting any of your stated goals is ok, then I guess you are tickled pink. Good for you. Most of us see what we could be and are frustrated that we aren’t there. Yes we are complaining (there is no such thing as a fan that doesn’t), but it’s because we care deeply about this university and team. We WANT them to succeed.

You are quitting on the team and program and continue to be clueless. Donate big to NIL if you want to help.

I’ve got other ideas besides just donating to NIL (which I do already) that I’m trying to get off the ground for player retention (all sports) and life after college. Stuff that helps kids succeed. I’m trying to help recruits and students see the value of the education Montana gives them and building the feeling of community. This means connections and networks in their fields of study, mentorship, maybe internships, things that further them even after college. By leveraging the alumni base in this way, we can make programmatic support more accessible to the majority since it’s less financially based. Not everyone can be big donors. But just about all alumni are professionals at something.

It’s not that we lost in the semis. I think you are seeing a lot of wins (which are fantastic!) but are missing the important ones. The gulf between the Griz and neighbors is wide in recruiting Montana kids (how many kicked ass Saturday for the cats? How many were from MISSOULA?). The gulf between line play on both o and d it also wide. The cats could run at will. Schmidt put out an interesting stat: in the 9 losses in Hauck 2.0 to xDSU and the cats, opponents have rushed for 250+ yards per game. Thats bad. Part of it is schematic and part of it is jimmies and joes. People point to 2023 as a time when it worked but that has a generational talent in Gub. Based on the d every other year, it was an anomaly.

The neighbors are killing it in almost everything. If you are fine with not winning the Big Sky and getting blown out by the cats every year, that’s on you. Most aren’t ok with it. We want the university to be the best it can be. Right now it’s not. Right now it’s playing second fiddle to THEM. That’s unacceptable.
May I make a suggestion to you? Make an appointment to speak with Bobby, Tim, or, any other staff member with the purpose of learning about what it takes to win 13 games in a season. You are a detractor when you incessantly whine about something which you really don’t fully understand nor control. Once you have that conversation, you might gain the humility it takes to be a true fan.

I applaud your efforts to think outside the box when it comes to supporting the players. I will help you in any way I can.

It takes playing school like Scared Heart and Central Washington.

Good. Go for it. I have been doing this on my own for 25 years. The Ivy leagues schools do this in an organized way.

As if any of them would do that. Im not saying winning 13 games is easy. It is very much not. You are right that I can’t control what the coaches do. I can’t control hardly anything. But I can see the issues facing the team and university as a whole. Anyone with eyes can.

We bitch and moan about things on a message board. We say opinions about what we think the coaches should do for shouldn’t do. That’s part and parcel of fandom. True fandom isn’t humility or aquiescence. It’s passion and the belief that if we aren’t number 1, we should be. Ultimately that’s what we are pulling for or trying to achieve.

I have no illusions about my importance or impact of my voice. I complain, but I’m trying to do something positive with it.

I’m gonna complain though. I’m too Italian not to.

I thought the “Back in Town” board on the wall at the Hanover Inn was a pretty cool idea, allowing alum to connect with one another when they’re visiting. Also, finding out that the class of 1978 organized and funded construction of the Life Science Center was very impressive.

I feel that this is a huge step at the university level that needs to be taken. How do we take this massive alumni base that exists all across the US and make them feel connected and as part of the campus and programs now as when they were when they were here. We literally ran into 3 UM alumni….3 that were decked out in cat gear and eagerly joining the mob mentality.

My degree from UM and the quality of life it has given me means a hell of lot more than hopping on a bandwagon to taste success as a fan. I want to see my Alma mater succeed on the field and in the community. And I want to see other UM alums succeed in their careers and find the quality of life and enjoyment due to their time at UM as I have.

“True fandom”? Not sure I agree. Humility is not acquiesce. It is knowing you’re not smarter than the “man” who’s been in the arena trying to make a difference. I enjoy your enthusiasm. I see a lot of good things in a lot of what you are saying.

13-2 is impressive. Its the 'two' that chokes me. Once in WGS and once in the litter box. Net result: scats to to the NC(and hopefully get stomped), and our Griz stay home.
What is it that Griz fans truly hate about the scats? Not the players, not the coaches. Their ESGGCG mantra is like some profoundly retarded adolescent nephew standing up and shouting this at grandmas funeral. Deep inside, you say, 'He's got the mind of a grape, so let it pass,' when deep inside you want to get up and beat the shit out of him. Its their goddamned fans, the ones you went to high school with, the ones you run into time after time.
Someone needs to get Bobby's attention and get that defense changed. It ain't workin'. The offense had the personnel to beat the world, but shit the bed time and time again. Pease has to answer for that, IMO. In the meantime,

have a Dr. Pepper.

Just my two cents.
