When was the last time we had a QB leading in passing? Ochs or Miller I am certain Ah Yat did.

I am not sure if Craig Ochs threw for as many yards but he was more efficient of a qb than Ah Yat has been so far better completion percentage and less interceptions. The good news is Ah Yat is only a sophomore and on pace to become the best Griz qb of all time if he keeps improving at the same rate that he did last year to this year.

I've heard that a bunch of university wingnuts did a study on the overall ratio of improvement over a complete collegiate sports career: ..it was like a 47 % improvement from freshmen to sophomore, 14 % improvement from sophomore to junior, and 7 % improvement from junior to senior. If I remember correctly. I think this was a study of men's collegian basketball career (assuming four years of playing eligibility). I don't know if it's relevant for football, or not. Besides, Och's best year was his senior year, if not mistaken.

Ochs senior year he threw for 3,800 yards, 33 touchdowns and something like 68% completion percentage it was truly amazing to see.

You probably never saw him play.
I saw him play at Recht Field before anyone else on this site knew he he existed. I used to live in the same neighborhood his father and mother in law still live in to this day and Craig lived himself in high school.

I've posted this before, but Don Read was quoted as saying had Ochs had the OL that DD had, it would be his number retired.

I don't think Don Read would ever say such a thing. Or At least the way you suggest.
Believe what you want, I was in the room when it was said. As were many others. I paraphrased it as accurately as I could recall. It is widely accepted that the Griz OL of '93-'95 was the best of all time.

Scott Gragg was a 2nd round draft picks and multi year successful nfl career, so thats an easy call. Nobody else that I recall wven touched that level, that I recall. But yes it was a tremendous o line.

Perhaps im reading your paraphrase incorrectly, but I took it as somehow Ochs would be in the HOF and not Dave. And that would be quite the hyperbole regardless from papa bear (RIP). Dave was Dave, and watching the highlights recently of the 95 chipper cemented the fact, we haven't had a D since Dave. And thats ok, and thats why hes in the HOF. Ochs was a Badass too, but I cant get on board with the idea that Read insinuated hed be at that level if only he had a 2nd round NFL draft pick at left tackle.

You're way out of your range. Ochs career at UM was 1.5 years and he was cheated out of his NC in '04. He was not a candidate for HOF, but Read implied he would have been with the '93-95 OL coached by Bob Beers. I was an OLman myself and watched their incredible work closely. Their performance did not take a big hit after Gragg left after '94. Watch a few '95 games if you don't believe that. It was just Don Read's way of expressing how impressed he was with Ochs. No one knew QBs better than Don Read.

You seem to believe what you want to believe. And you're implying I'm making stuff up.

95 o line was great. I was in WV live and in person for the natty, and also watched it closely as a 13 year old kid. Watching the replay, i was struck at how often Dave was hit, and yet he continued to step up in the pocket and deliver strikes down field. That was impressive.

But our 2004 o line when Ochs was at his best was great as well, and I don't buy it that Read would make that comparison. Maybe tongue in cheek by way of complimenting ochs. But coaches, and hall of fame coaches at that, don't play the comparison game like that.

My wife and I were on the field after the '95 game, chatting with her cousin, LOT Eric Simonson and Columbus LB Greg Fitzgerald. Eric battled the Marshall All-American DE the whole game. Eric said he was the best he had ever played against. Read gave an inspiring talk at the postgame celebration, then only a few days later announced his retirement. Broke my heart, he was only 62.

The '04 OL was manhandled by JMU. 44 yards rushing even with Lex. Ochs kept us in the game with 371 yards passing and 3 TD passes. Would have been 4 but for a bad drop in the EZ by Talmage. Other bad breaks included the blown OB call on our punt return that otherwise went to the house and two missed FGs by Carpenter. We were badly beaten on both sides of line, but Ochs was magnificent even on the bad turf. It was shortly thereafter that retiring AD Read made his comments in a GSA meeting that you choose to disbelieve.

That field in 2004 was bullshit! And i'll never forget that celebration on the field in Huntington. Simo was a beast, dont get me wrong im not discounting that o line. Im just suggesting you may be adding hyperbole, or papa bear was speaking hyperbole a bit. Splitting hairs, GO GRIZ
