Vigens future prospects

First off, yes i feel dirty for starting a scat thread. That being said, im sure there are several Griz fans who are secretly hoping Vigen gets poached sooner then later. I for one am hoping its later. More then likely he wont go anywhere if he loses to the Griz and doesn't win a natty. Possible some teams desperate for a coach may reach but not likely. Plenty of FBS assistants to choose from over a relatively unproven FCS coach who's major accomplishment is recruiting and riding the coattails of one of the best RB/WR's to come out of Butte.

Sounds like he had an opportunity to go to Wazzou last year, but they weren't willing to wait until after the natty.

I'm sure his name will pop up for a bunch of open jobs. I think a lot of it will depend on timing and how far MSU goes in the playoffs.
He will have his opportunities. He is a very good coach. And everything I have heard about him is that he is a good guy. I really just dislike him one day every November.

Someone really rooting for Vigen to leave Bozeman is Jeff Choate--his Reno miracle featuring his Bobcat misfits hasn't materialized, his toothless Wolfpack hasn't yet won a conference game in Choate's second season, and at 1-7 with Bronco Mendenhall's Utah State looming on Saturday after a bye, the ice 🧊 is starting to crack loudly under Choda's feet in Reno : ( !!!

As of now he's been mentioned for the following gigs:

-Oregon State
-Colorado State
-New Mexico (If Eck gets poached by CSU or OSU)

Other MWC teams who may fire their coach/unhappy fans/hot seat:

-Nevada
-Wyoming

I think if Wyoming in particular fires their HC they will go after Vigen or NDSUs HC as both came from the NDSU/Wyoming coaching tree.

Maybe he could go to Nevada. They are going to be looking sooner than later.
What if he goes back to Nevada and Choate comes back to Bozeman? I suppose it could work out for both teams but I don't see Nevada as the best fit for Vigen. Perhaps Wyoming would be a good fit. CSU in theory could work but I think they will try to get someone of a higher pedigree than working for the bubs. Vigen might want to go for a Big 10 OC job and then takeover a program like Minnesota or Wisconsin where he could really thrive.

What was their record before he was hired?
They were 2-6 in conference play the year prior to hiring Choate, in 2023, which while not great is definitely better than winless. They were 5-3 in conference in 2021 and went to a bowl. That being said those numbers prior to the NIL and transfer portal era probably are not relevant because Nevada has a lot less monetary support than other teams which is what it seems like the FBS at least has come down to.

This is an exceptional year, lots of big time coaches bite the dust, maybe ADs as well(ala LSU). The dominoes are falling. If Vigen gets a bite or two, I wouldn't be surprised. If he turns it, or them, down, I'm disappointed. I think he's earned it.

Rumor has it he has been offered the Auburn job and he is going to throw the first bobcat playoff game so he can jump right in. Don't have confirmation. Yet you might watch him. If he starts acting wonky have your assistant coaches tie him down and gag him. Just saying.

Choate is certainly no Chris Ault

The really interesting thing is that MSU plays Nevada next season, and you just know that Choate would NOT want to lose to his former school. But MSU will surely be favored in that game unless Choate works a miracle or two in Reno over the offseason.

That would be quite awkward.

Though Vegan coaching there next fall is about as likely as Choate still being the coach in Reno.
