Michael Wortham highest grade in NCAA

Marcus Knight was a huge win for the Griz, coming out of Junior College. (not the portal but a classic transfer). If his time at Montana didn't get cut short, who knows what more he would have done. And, remember, he never left Montana. Graduated as a two sport athlete and then did very well at Tennessee Tech for a post grad year he decided to take. Made an impressive comeback to the gridiron there. Wound up very highly rated of all the running backs coming out of college in the 2024 draft. Didn't get picked up, but should have for sure. Definitely, one of the all time great backs to play at Montana. Really just had one year and made his mark big time. (COVID break and injury took two, almost three, years from him). Very happy he was a Griz.

I think people on both sides of this are misunderstanding PFF scores and where they are and aren't useful.

As a measure of individual performance in a single game, they're perfectly fine. Hoops is right that there are instances where guys get misjudged based on the reviewer not knowing what the guy is supposed to be doing, but that's a little less of an issue for the OL where the job on each play is pretty straightforward, compared to say a Safety disguising coverages. There's also the issue at this level that the people appraising the players aren't the PFF A teams they have at every NFL game, it's the lower level guys who are asked to watch film of a bunch of games and get scores out quickly.

As I mentioned, PFF scores are mostly good measures of players in single, independent games. The players are all judged usually by the same person or team in one game, so the criteria is uniform. It becomes a problem when people talk about PFF scores for players from different games and across the season. This is an issue at the NFL level, too. The consistency is very poor, and a lot of articles have been written about this over the years.

It's far from a perfect system, and I would put a lot more stock into any team's internal grades for their players.

But since we don't have those, and it doesn't matter that much, both this PFF score for Wortham and the PFF scores for the OL in the other thread are fine approximate measurements of each's performances against Sacred Heart.

I believe Wortham’s efforts are certainly putting him in the conversation. He’s been consistently exceptional. I’m pleased with all the guys who came over to Missoula this year. We’ve been fortunate. Yet Michael’s addition to the team was a home run.

Your three options were all extraordinary players. Joe Douglass was probably our best receiver ever. Ochs one of our best QB’s.
JD Quinn was as fine of a lineman as I’ve seen, the epitome of DOLA. Yet I think he holds the school record for most personal fouls. I believe he was called for 50 during his career here. A record unlikely to be broken.

Quinn didn't get 50 personal fouls at UM. Great player, tho.
 
I agree with Mr Hoops or whoever said that PFF scores are unreliable and misleading. I love me some Money Mike, but is he really implicitly the best WR in all of CFB? Really?
Remember last year how bubs were citing PFF scores and claiming one of their OLs was the best lineman in all of CFB? A dude I had never even heard of. As far as I know, the guy didn’t get drafted and is not even in the league.

Why? Do PFFers know which route the WR was supposed to run? Do they know the week to week adjustments that are made based on the other team's tendencies?
