Those type of guys always struggle to stick around the league.
You can’t really just be good at everything to take a roster spot.
They want the guys that are insanely good at one thing. Kinda what it takes to make it in the nfl amongst the freaks.

He isn’t the prototypical NFL quarterback so that was out and no matter how insanely athletic and talented he is, for any other position he is competing with players who have practiced and played at their position for years. With a 53 man roster, there aren’t a whole lot of places for “athlete”.
i think what he's good at is being a quarterback. he's a great runner and a very accurate passer. he just doesn't have the arm strength to make some of the throws required in the pro's. his passes often seemed to move pretty slow, but they usually got there in catch-able form and didn't get picked off. teammates rallied around him. maybe he can do that in canada, i dunno.

MSU cost him millions.
Think he’s implying that if they had continue to play him as a receiver, which I believe he played until the other QB quit, he would have developed his route running and pass catching abilities well enough to make it on an NFL roster.
Sorry to hear the news. Hope the kid lands on his feet and does well.

My thought too, on both points ... if Canadian football is what he wants to do or not. His Choice.
I argued this exact point weeks before the draft and got absolutely destroyed by GRIZ fans (from Butte I presume, and hoops) who told me he was a shoo in because of his insane athletic abilities. Problem is, as I pointed out, the nfl is loaded with those guys and dozens of players with far better measureables than the wine guy get cut every year.

Very possibly. He would have been our best WR and gadget guy. Who knows, if we had him playing his true position, what is the career like for him and Bergen in maroon? They were freshman at the same time, right? Do they complement each other as two dangerous speed weapons? Do they compete for the same position and only one of them ends up getting a shot at the NFL? Interesting questions.
What I can say for sure is that if he came to Missoula and played WR, he would have been better prepared for a chance at the NFL, which is always a longshot for a guy drafted late. Troy Andersen would also have walked into the NFL with less toll taken on his body from being asked to limp on the field and be a battering ram up the middle, then limp back off the field late in his college career.

He was never a very good passer and "athletes" like him are a dime a dozen in the NFL. It was always going to be an uphill battle for a guy like Mellott to make a roster. He needs an almost perfect situation and a little bit of luck to break through. I certainly wasn't rooting against him but this isn't really surprising news.
Also:
Teams churn practice squads a ton during the year. Could very simply be that the Saints needed or saw a specific player available they needed to fill out their reserve squad for practices/scout team or to add some much needed depth because of an injury concern. Mellot could have been that guy for the Saints for the last month. I could have seen him being a scout team QB who might play the role of a Kyler Murray (NO wk 1 opponent and so forth).
Him getting cut doesn't mean the end of his NFL career. He could very easily get picked up next week. Pretty common. He is a pretty useful tool for NFL practice squads because of his versatility. Probably what might allow him to hang on as a PS player.
