It’s time to move up to the FBS the Mountain West preferably.

I'll say this again: If the fans only remain interested because we are conference contenders and have a shot at a "national championship" every year, we should really look at moving down. Cheaper, there is a playoff, and ANY conference would love to have us at a lower level. Oh, we don't want that? Explain why again?

If we stay in the FCS we should schedule more games against the Dakota teams like North Dakota this season. These schools are more of our peers than anyone in the Big Sky besides Idaho and MSU. Idaho going by the attendance numbers stinks compared to MSU and UM.

So what you're saying is that it's only about winning. Not competing at a higher level. You'd rather beat up Little Sisters of the Blind than compete against our peers...(or you believe the fanbase feels that way)...
Our peers are Montana State, Idaho, Sac State, Weber, North Dakota... etc. Teams we play this year. If you don't like scheduling CWA, I get that, just like some FBS teams don't like scheduling FCS teams.

Flip side of this argument: explain why you don't want us to join the SEC.

Montana's biggest problem is not the competition. The problem is part of Montana's unrealistic and less than knowledgeable fan base, which has expectations that don't match reality and has little or no understanding of UM's financial situation and prospects nor the importance of finances in competing at higher levels. In my view.

Moving up is not all about attendance at football games, although that certainly helps. There is another elephant in the room and it starts with "e" and ends with "nrollment". If people want Montana to move up to the FBS, everyone in support of it needs to recruit 2 kids to enroll at Montana next year and then those kids get 2 more kids to enroll the same year or the following year. Plus, it helps to have a vibrant business community with the corporate HQ of at least one regional business located in Missoula.

The other teams we play this year are Central and Eastern WA, Indiana St, Idaho St, Cal Poly, Sacred Heart and Portland St. Are they our peers?
Cal Poly and Sacred Heart are both better schools academically than UM. Cal Poly is way better. EWU isn't a great school, but in the not too distant past they were at or near the top of FCS and sometimes beating the Griz in football. EWU has been good in basketball Sacred Heart is 4-1 this season. Central Washington is 3-1, beating the 3 opponents by 26, 46 and 60 points. CWU is 24th in the Versus Sports Simulator, whatever that is. Indiana St is ranked 363 in national universities. Idaho State is ranked just below that. UM is also ranked 363. Indiana St plays in the top FCS conference.

UM sure isn’t Cal Poly's peer academically. Way below.

I think joining the SEC would be incredible! The access to those kinds of resources would transform the entire university overnight, and it would be awesome to see if we could become somewhat competitive in a few decades with access to those resources. Maybe not, but I’d definitely be in attendance when every conference foe came to town.

In reality, however, we’re only one step from what people call DII, whereas we’re two steps below the SEC.

This post says a lot but not what you think it says. Sacred Heart's 4 wins are over Stonehill (??), LIU (??), Norfolk State (??), Delaware State (??) and by single digits.

How do you know what I think it says? Don’t know how you could possibly know that.

The post says what it says. 4-1 is what it is. Feel free to provide more analysis of each game. What are the records of each of those opponents? Could you give us more info on
the recent history of Sacred Heart?

I still believe the top 64 FBS teams will break off in order to get as much money as possible, think "Super Conference with several 8 team groups. This would be great for UM as they could join a new conference of say Idaho, Nevada, Boise, WSU, UNLV, Colorado State, kittens etc

And still have PLAYOFFS
Best of both worlds, gain better schools and still have playoffs

But that has been in the works for 20 years...
