FCS STATS Poll, Sept 22 (Griz #5 … Still)

As we rather expected, there are some very interesting changes in the STATS poll. (FWIW: The Griz are just one point behind MSU.)

Here’s the link to the full STATS discussion.

I would have thought that a 3-0 start with a big Top-15 (as of today) win over UND would be enough for the resume at this point to put us up over MSU. But, and it's a BIG if, if Montana beats #8 Idaho on Saturday night, I would think the voters would have to put us at #3 over MSU and Tarleton State. That will be two top-15 wins in two weeks.

I can remember in years past where the Griz won and dropped. I think the cats should have traded places with us. You don’t beat mercyhurst 17-0 who isn’t even close to the top 25 and keep your spot. Granted we did struggle against a D2 who was quite good. And barely beat UND but they are gonna be a top team this year. But we just demolished ISU and hung 63 on em. We beat them the way a top 5 team is expected to beat them. MSU only putting up 17 on a crappy team is puzzling at best.

The difference is the D2 we played would likely beat Mercyhurst fairly easily.

Would they?

Again, I am not advocating for Mercyhurst here, but do any of you realize that their three losses are all against top 25 teams.

8/28 at (24) Youngstown State 24-15, maybe not as close as the final score might indicate, but I would have expected YSU to put up 48, not 24. Like the game in Bozeman, turnovers (4 of them) and penalties were costly to them so there is a lack of discipline there no doubt.
9/13 at #21 Sacramento State they actually led 18-7 halfway through the second quarter. This one was very much closer than the 49-28 score would indicate with Sac State scoring on their last three actual possessions.
9/20 at #4 Bozeman, they shut the scats out in the second half and limited them to 121 yards.

If SDSU doesn't pound them into the prairie this week, I think we are going to have to reconsider Mercyhurst. I do, once again, expect that they will be over matched in Brookings. So far this season, I have to admit that they have done much better than I thought they would, but I am still not ready to elevate the NEC into anything more than an automatic bid only conference that serves as a hall pass for a questionable CAA at large team to gain a playoff win over, thus "validating" their selection.

Either way, I wouldn't be so quick to claim that they would lose a game, which would be at home, against Central Washington.

Took awhile to look over the overall poll because “events intervened.” Anyway, as I expected, Illinois State did slip a spot – but only the one – after their close call against North Alabama.

I see the pollsters thought a close loss to San Jose State didn't mean squat … Idaho didn’t drop at all.

I almost nailed where Monmouth would bounce up to. I guessed they’d jump to #15, and the pollsters put them at #16. On the other hand, they absolutely crushed Villanova. I guessed they might hang on around #18, but the pollsters put them all the way down to #20 … a huge drop.

Some on here (including me) felt that Incarnate Word should drop out of the top-25, but I didn’t have the nerve to do that in my guesses. No problem for the pollsters, I’m glad to say. They did drop New Hampshire, as expected.

The “replacements” were a complete surprise. I. along with others, thought the pollsters would get a couple Ivies in. Presbyterian was not much of a surprise since they were just out in the previous poll. But then they reached all the way down to elevate Youngstown State.

I have no problem with the YSU choice. They’ve been getting votes, and their only loss was to a pretty good Michigan State team.. But putting the “Blue Hose” in is a complete joke. Sure, that (4-0) record looks impressive, but two of those wins are: a piss-poor NAIA team, and a bad D-II that has won one game in the last three years. C’mon!

I wish you would have been right on the Griz to 4, almost got it, but I had no faith in the voters, I am not surprised Montana closed the gap, but didn't expect it to be within 1.

What have the cats done THIS YEAR to merit a #4 ranking?
Their preseason ranking and their loss to SDSU is their entire resume, at this point.

It's fine, though, it'll work itself out. We'll definitely know if they're good or not after their trip to Flagstaff in a couple weeks.

Not much. That's why the preseason polls are such a travesty. No one, and I mean no one, knows how good (or bad) a team will be going into a new season. Minor exceptions might be teams that return a lot of starters from last year. In this new era, how often is that true? So the preseason polls set a false "baseline" for the pollsters to start with. Of course, it works both ways: Teams that start out low usually have to go on a winning run to get noticed.

This will generally work out over time. I only do my "guesses" thing because it can spark discussions (like this) about a team's Strength of Schedule, and which games ahead seem to matter most.

No effing way they pay attention or watch all the games. The only poll that matters is the end of the year, but sheesh!
Agree on both points. Earlier, I suggested that the pollsters at least looked at the box scores, showing how the scoring went. Surely some do, but I wonder how many just look at the final scores and the overall W-L records. As I said before, the only use in the polls during the season is to give us another topic to discuss and maybe lead us to look at what a team's schedule shows, etc.
