Jensen Article - Missoulian

The Griz had 45 players from last year's team who exhausted their eligibility, entered the portal or retired from football early before the team went through spring camp.

Jensen has tried to fit in with the Griz while also providing leadership to a group that includes sophomore Gage Sliter and redshirt freshmen Luke Flowers and Cody Schweikert.

"These guys make it easy," he said. "Great guys to be around. It's a great locker room. Guys want to work hard, want to get better. I think that fits me as well. It's been good really coming in and fitting into the locker room. The guys have made that easy. Easy adjustment."

"Love the coaching staff," Jensen said. "Coach Pease has done a good job with me and some of the younger guys kind of getting us up to speed.
It's been great working with him and kind of getting that foundation for the offense set. Looking forward to build off of that into the summer and the fall."

Jensen is now learning another offense in college. He began at FBS program BYU as a preferred walk-on in spring 2021 after he graduated high school in 2019 and went on a Mormon mission. He then spent fall 2021 at Contra Costa College, a non-scholarship junior college in California.

His success got him a shot at FBS New Mexico of the Mountain West in May 2022. Weeks later, he flipped to USC, another FBS program that was in the Pac-12 his first two seasons and was in the Big Ten for his final year.

He said Montana's offense is "pretty similar" to others in which he has played.

"I think coach Pease does a good job of putting a lot of stuff together," he said. "He understands how to attack defenses. A lot of similar concepts that I've been used to. So it's been a good transition and learning. Coach Pease has done a good job with coaching us and getting us ready for that.”

"I think I'm a level-headed player," he said in describing himself as a quarterback. "Try to stay consistent. Not get too high, too low. Try and lead by example. I think I do that. Work hard and just try to push the guys to get better."

"I think consistency is a big thing," Jensen said of learning the offense this spring. "Getting up to speed with the offense and I think just really being able to build that consistency practice after practice, that's something I got to work on and want to continue to work on in this summer and the fall."

Good article. Hopefully he is ready to go, and I enjoy him saying that we use the same concepts that he was working in Lincoln Riley's system.

I also find it interesting that we keep hearing takes from current and recently former players praising the staff. It seems like they are doing a great job connecting with kids and giving them hard coaching that helps them grow. There is chatter from fans at times that the coaches aren't connecting or are too hard on kids, but these crops of players we have had the last couple of years don't seem to feel that way.

My view on the negative chatter we see/hear on that subject is a telltale sign that the person is a troll, has big personal bias, or doesn't have a clue about football, Griz football or sports. Of course, all players don't love coaches (never did and never will), but those fans closer to the program can see and feel that most of these anonymous complaints/comments are out of step with reality.

Personally, I'm getting more pumped up about the Griz as days go by. I see a lot of the position gaps being filled and the depth increasing. I like the QBs and OL. our returning players provide a good foundation. The Griz are well positioned for a very good year.
Agreed. I actually feel better this year than I did last year at this time. With the schedule we have, there is opportunity to absolutely win the Big Sky again and take a top seed into the playoffs.

I love the addition of Jensen. A big part of being a good QB or a QB that can produce is having a level head and strong mind. I am definitely hopeful about him. The only thing I'm worried about is can he escape pressure and utilize his legs if needed.
Ive read a lot of comments on here during the past season leading up to now and there's such a a huge emphasis or knock on QB play. Yes you need a good QB to run your offense , but like any team sport especially one that requires all 11 players to be on the same page, everyone needs to do their job.
Last year our O-Line play was average at best and often times looked horrendous. It's not all their fault, but it all starts up front and if the O line isn't situated then it doesn't matter who's at QB or RB. And now with a nother new oline coach that the players need to get used to, we shall see how that plays out.
Another important aspect of our offensive game is the WRs. We don't need fast receivers and I think it's hilarious when people post on here and say "oh so and so is a great get because he has speed and he's tall. Hahaha, While it would be nice if we have fast receivers, we need guys that can catch the ball consistently.
Watching highlights of the spring game and seeing Gurnsey catch some tough balls made me think of the old Griz teams. Back in the day we maybe had a couple of really fast guys but the one thing that stood out the most was our receivers would never drop the ball. It was rare that we dropped the ball. Guys like Gurnsey dad, Matt Wells, Shalom Baker, Mike Earhardt, Justin Olsen, Joe Douglass, Raul Pacheco, Josh Paffhausen, Jimmy Farris and Travis Walker. And out of that whole group, only one ran close to a 4.3 and that was Farris and only one was over 6ft and that was Earhardt.
We need guys that can consistently catch the ball. Last year we had way too many dropped passes. And guys couldn't even get open or didn't have the time to get open because Fife and Ah Yat didn't have time to throw the ball.
With all the uncertainty on offense, it's more uncertain on defense.
As of right now we don't have a LB or any player on the defense that is the QB of the defense. The Griz always or most of the time had that with Braxton Hill and Levi the other year along with Riley. Having a LB like Braxton to lead your defense along with Gubner was huge. But it has yet to be determined if we will have a leader on defense that can bring them all together

I guess I'm old school but bringing in 24 year old to play QB for one year is not what I want for this team. I want a QB who will lead the team for several seasons and mentor his backup. I think Ah Yat can be the guy but he seems to play with all out abandum and therefore is injury prone.
Hauck's biggest weakness has always been inability to develop an young QB and reliable passing game. He does a good job masking his weakness but just can't seem to correct it. I'm glad the coaches are really trying to get Ah Yat to be the guy and really hope they are successful. If they are we could have a great season. If Jensen is starting we will be in for a long season.

You wanna know what I want? I want whoever is gonna help us win the most games possible. I don’t give a shit what their background is. The goal is to win and go with the guy that’ll put us in the best possible position to win!

Billings, I get your point but in todays landscape with the portal, who’s to say that young QBs will stay 2-3 years. Generally speaking of course cus I’m sure AY’s not going anywhere but GTID has a valid point. You gotta plan one year at a time now a days. Winning today will help build for tomorrow. If Jensen is the better QB today and gives us a better chance to win today, he needs to play.
