MBBALL Let's Talk Wisconsin

After a quick look at their stats and roster, i surprisingly like this match up.

Despite their height up front, their top scorers are guards. More surprising, they don't have a dominant rebounder.

It looks to me, it's a strength on strength match up, guards verses guards. Guard play wins in the tournament usually. The GRIZ are loaded at guard. All of our main rotation guys are guards, except Sawyer. The GRIZ are used to playing mainly guards. Overall, the GRIZ have more guard depth with rotational minutes.

Plus our bigs can bring their bigs out of the paint as perimeter threats. Spreading the floor and letting our guards work is our best option.

My concerns are, if Wisconsin does take advantage of their size, how can we counter that size when we're defending?
Also, if the officials eat the whistle, can we score enough? If, it's a foul fest, they shoot FTs at a very high %.

More often than not, the GRIZ offense executes efficiently. The GRIZ cannot get away from that focus.

I'm confident, this won't be an expected blow out. The GRIZ will show well. They'll keep it respectable. Let's hope, it results in a GRIZ upset.

I still remember the 2012 match up with Wisconsin. Will Cherry, Selvig, Jamar, Gregory, in Tinkle's 5th (?) Year. Their fan base was here talking smack with one or two notable exceptions. Here's to better game this time!

That Wisconsin team had 3 future NBA players and 3 more future G League players. Doubtful this year’s Badgers have that many future professional players. Griz will have a challenge if they do.

Will Cherry was uncharacteristically lost for the first half. I will always think if we played our game we could have stayed with them. It was a frustrating afternoon.

Opening line is Wisconsin -16.5…so THEY think it’s a blowout…FWIW.

Wisconsin likes to have their bigs outside to screen and gives them the green light to shoot the three. It looks like they run a lot of the same action on offense that we run or have seen in conference play. Tonje is their guy on offense and plays well off the on-ball screen.

I can’t get it to link here, but on ESPN “Guide to all 68 teams”, they have Montana as a possible Cinderella with a ceiling of Sweet 16.

Montana Grizzlies

Region: East
Record: 25-9
Tournament ceiling: Sweet 16

If you're looking for possible Cinderellas, you should pay attention to teams that recently turned a corner. Montana fits that bill, winning 14 of its past 15 games. Travis DeCuire, who was a star for the Grizzlies in the early 1990s, has led his team to its third NCAA tournament appearance since he was hired in 2014. His starting lineup -- All-Big Sky first-team honoree Joe Pridgen, Brandon Whitney, Malik Moore, Kai Johnson and Te'Jon Sawyer -- has registered 125.7 points per 100 possessions. (For contrast: The Cleveland Cavaliers, the NBA's top offense, are at 121.8.) That output has flipped the Grizzlies into one of the country's top offensive units entering the tournament: Since Jan. 20, they have been a top-40 offense, making 60.9% of their shots inside the arc and 42.1% from beyond it -- both the No. 2 marks nationally at BartTorvik.com over that stretch.

I always have said there is nothing worse than playing to a conference championship game on selection Sunday and losing. The lack of rest and quick turnaround is not a worth it unless you win the conference tournament.

And I believe our tournament used to end on Saturday night, almost as bad. '18 & '19 it was bad enough we had to play michigan, but we also seemed to still have heavy legs

I hope our kids won’t be intimidated by their size. I want Brandon, Money and Kai to keep slashing to the basket. Don’t let one or two blocked shots stop you.

Brandon especially has been good at finishing at the rim, and Money’s quickness could give their bigs fits. This strategy also gets us better looks from deep.

The Joe Pridgen effect means THE GRIZ are intimidated by NOBODY.
