Recruiting Changes

So watching NDSU and SDSU you see an alarming difference in their defense lines and offense lines compared to UM. They seems to have more size and in some cases speed. Im certain there recruiting base is more Midwest. Like Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota etc. Might we shift our recruiting more that direction as well for linemen at the very least.
I know we have in years past recruited California, Washington, Oregon, manly west coast ish….
Could we get a foothold in recruiting the Midwest?
Don’t get me wrong we have had a few players on the lines that have done well. But especially in offense line we always seems to struggle.
Our QB’s right now have hardly any time to check reads.
I’d like to see some horses up there that can open holes and hold blocks. It

Don’t know if you are seeing it wrong. When the Griz can’t win the in state battle for recruits on either side of the line, I am skeptical they will win against NDSU or SDSU in their back yards. Right now, I think Griz fans without rose colored glasses are asking what is going on with recruiting and getting top talent. Especially on the lines.
 
It would be great if we could get recruits from the Midwest but there are a couple of problems. Not the least of which is money. It’s expensive to fly, especially if you’re trying to stay close to a recruit.
I would be curious to know how we were able to get Eli Gillman? I’m pretty sure he was recruited and offered by NDSU and SDSU and other FSC schools in the area. Not sure what the connection to Montana is?
The other issue is some of our former players are now coaches in California, Oregon, Washington etc. so they become our eyes and ears for talent that slips through the cracks.
Recruiting is an exact science but the major issues are money and contacts.
 
Idk. If you look at a year like 2008. One of our best offensive lines ever it was a mix of Montana kids and out of state guys with all conference dudes at every position and backing them up.

Dow Hillsland Quin Russum Horn.

Those guys would have handled any DLine the bison or rabbits have put together.

Had guys from Sidney Billings Drummond. And then Spokane Texas Idaho and Portland.

Seems like it’s more important just to get the right guy in the program rather than where they come from.

Yes, this was one of the main reason for the Pawlak hire. Hopefully it pans out!

He wasn’t offered by the XDSUs. He really wanted to go to NDSU but wasn’t contacted until after he committed.
 
I think this notion that you need corn fed recruits to make good lineman is a bit silly. Coaching, developing and a premier strength training program is how you dominate in the trenches. The commitment has to be there and you are going to probably lose your best players to the portal in this scenario but it is still the best approach.
Western Washington is prime recruiting grounds for our level of play. The state of Washington has seven million people and Western Washington has really good HS football. It is generally only recruited by UW and WSU and only for the select few 4 star guys. EWU has made hay for years stacking their roster from this area and we can beat them head to head in many instances.
The bobcats have made some in roads in Texas because of former players and coaches living there but that state gets hit much harder for recruiting. California is good just because of population.
It takes time to develope recruiting ties to areas.

UM used to get a lot of players from Bellevue, and from what I recall a lot of them were lineman. Not sure what happened to that connection

Respectfully, I disagree. I would take a good high school hoops player every single day of the week. They need solid footwork if they work the post position and hand eye coordination is also at a premium. Hands are critical for a good lineman.
