Vigen's Next Stop

1983 Griz

Well-known member
Win or lose the Griz-Cat game, Vigen will be receiving considerable interest from FBS teams looking to make a coaching change. I would think the outreach has already started. So, does he stay put or make a change to follow the money and, if so, where does he go? My money is on Wyoming. Other possibilities?

Vigen was at NDSU for 16 years and then at Wyoming for 7.

It's not crazy to think he would take another job if it was the right one in his eyes, but he doesn't seem inclined to move too quickly.

I don't see how Wyoming would be an option. Sawvel is in his first year there. They've been bad, but college programs almost never go one and done.

The kid moved with Neon Deion, as did Robby when Bobby moved.

Choate's son remained at MSU after he left. Vigen's could do the same. Though the desire to actually coach your boys is going to vary from person to person. Hoops is correct-- his kids aren't FBS players. At least, Jake isn't and I doubt that Grant will be.

His kids srent good enough to play FBS.
Neither are many current players on the Griz, but they still wear a Griz jersey.

Four years is an eternity in college football. We all know that a coach's stock can go up (or down) in one season. Vigen needs to sell while his stock price is high.
While I'm sure a good salary at MSU coupled with what I assume is a low cost of living is nice, a head coaching job at the right program does bring in life changing and potentially generational money. If MSU goes undefeated I bet he's getting some great offers.

Nope, and we have players who are not good enough to play at the FCS level, and they still run out of the tunnel.

I don't think that's true.

Hauck has found recruiting more difficult/competitive in his 2nd stint and this year's Griz team is a step down, personnel wise, from last year's.

But UM is still a top 10 FCS program and in the upper echelon of the BSC. I don't think they have many/any players who aren't FCS worthy.

The two current MWC openings are Utah State and Fresno State. The new Utah State AD only hires people with Ohio State ties so he will likely get passed over for that job. Fresno State though is interesting. He could have a shot at that one, and I think that's one of the more attractive jobs in the league. There's bound to be more that open up though.
