Haslam's Recent Interview on Where UM Is

As somebody who works in hospitality, I can tell you firsthand that the state bed tax is steep. As for a sales tax, some (not many) state lawmakers may be in favor of that, but none of their constituents will EVER be in favor of that. Not unless they repealed state income tax or property taxes (which are already absurdly high). MT would be outrageously expensive with a sales tax on top of income tax and soaring property taxes. That conversation is a non-starter.
Yes it is. I pay it often.

But most municipalities pay for things like stadiums and arenas with hotel taxes. They -by and large - do not greatly impact locals. And hotels in a place like Montana are rather price inelastic. People are still coming to Glacier and Yellowstone if hotel prices rise by $7. I'm still spending 5 weekends a fall in Missoula hotels on game weeks.

Yep! Last time, 75% of the voters said NO! Idaho voted it in back in 1965, ONLY 3% to fund public education. It's now 6%, and not just for schools. The legislature giveth, and taketh away, voters be damned. Exemption for this lobbyi$t or that lobbyi$t, local sales tax options. It will never end.

That's great. Honestly didn't know that, so thank you for educating me. I still don't want anyone who is struggling, which is a lot of our state, sadly, to be paying more their toilet paper or the pencils they send their kids to school with, but your point is very well taken.

My concern there, and I've often heard the argument that replacing part of the income or property tax with a sales tax would be that I do not trust our state government to not go jack the income and property tax back up. Either way, when it comes to tax structure, I just don't like the way that the sales tax spreads more of the financial burden to the people who can least afford it. Taxation is a necessary evil to have nice things as a society, but I'm just not in favor of raising taxes like this in order for the Griz to move up.

Just my perspective, I get that many others will disagree.
You’re in the wrong place if you think something this reasonable is welcome here.

I believe that evidence shows that playing fbs football generates its own income well beyond any additional costs.

But if the state has to invest, simply raise the hotel tax a few pennies.
For a school like Montana, I am not aware of any evidence that going FBS generates revenue behind expenses. Most programs that move up as not as successful as they once were either.

Can you imagine Hoops's opposition to the Washington's giving UM money for WAGriz? He would argue that UM doesn't have the funds to support the continual maintenance required or the fan base to fill it. Thank God people like him are nowhere near the people making these decisions.
Let me know when the Washingtons or anyone agree to fund ongoing operating expenses. You have no clue. I know most of the top of the athletic department, Bodnar, most of the top football donors, some regents and the Governor. Also, the coaches. Just talked to Bobby, Tim and Justin 15 minutes ago after practice. I first introduced Bodnar and Gianforte before Bodnar started as president.

I get that, I've stopped posting here nearly as much. But I do think it is more welcome than people think. There are a lot of people that contribute really good thoughts and ideas. I'm not trying to name everybody, but there are good things posted here. Griz Till I Die seems to always have something thoughtful to post. CDA made me really think a LOT more about recruiting with some of his thoughts. And there are a dozen or so others I can think of off the top of my head that contribute good thoughts, good humor, and some good information. There are a lot of reasonable people here, there is just SO much chaff to separate from the wheat.

I'll keep doing my best in my mission to civilize. I may not post as much, but I'm still happy to be Don Quixote tilting at my windmills on eGriz.

And, actually, I've met almost a dozen people from the board at this point, and everyone is super chill. Shout out to Titlist and Mikey and all the guys whose screen names I'm forgetting for welcoming me and my friends. I met Brint before I was on the board, and he has always been so nice (probably a fault of his for being this kind to a stranger). Rob Peterson from his podcast is a dope guy, and I keep meaning to go talk to him more. Not trying to doxx him, but he was super cool when we talked where he works and I keep meaning to go back and talk more. Hoops has been super nice to me when we have met in person, and I like to consider AlabamaGriz a friend at this point. He and his fam could stay with us any time if the wanted to hang out on vacation.

I know I typed too much to the flippant comment (no offense), but there is a lot more good to egriz than people realized. I wish I hadn't missed so many games this year with all of life going on, but would have loved to link up with some folks like Reinell that I have missed out on, but I've only been to the Missouri State game this year, so I whiffed on some folks. Hoping to rectify some of that at the Davis game.

There are a lot of good folks on eGriz. Just gotta sift through a lot of chaff.

CDA is really only sharing what his wife shares with him.

Your mission is impossible. I've been called many things in my lengthy life, but 'chaffe' is certainly new.👍 Not inappropriate, but certainly new.🤗

They all think you are stupid. Thankfully, you have no influence over anything that happens at UM. You and I both know it. UM will leave the Big Sky in the next five years. I guarantee it.

All of them are my friends. 5 years? Wow, what a great prediction. You are stupid, and a troll. You and I both know it.

You forgot to mention the guy you MOST want to meet is AZGrizFan. I'm sure it was an honest oversight on your part.

Absolutely! And thank you for the kindness last time. I'll bring fireball this time. :)

It was an honest, though horrific, oversight. Offer is always open on the whiskey when you are in town for a game!

Cool story....

The cheapest ticket to this weeks Cal Poly game is $61 on Vivid. That is for Cal Poly!! Imagine if it was for Nevada, or Wyoming.
Seems all schools in the BSC RAISE ticket prices when either Montana schools are in town to play. They know the fan base will travel well. Especially to start off with neither Montana school would warrant opposing fan bases to raise tickets prices if the Montana schools are coming to town. That of course might change if we perform well and continue to bring in a solid fan base which I believe we would.
We hopefully would see better opposing fan attendance in Montana with Nevada, Wyo, UNLV, Air Force. Additionally we could do some home and home with PAC12 schools! We would get more $ playing there, and again fan bases that might just travel!
