2024 Griz Soccer

That's a big win for Griz Soccer to close out non-conference. Boise State has a good team and may end up winning the Mountain West, which would be good for us. We went 2-1-2 against Mountain West teams in the non-conference with Boise State being our best result. Ever since Citowicki made the decision to change formations last week against UND, the team has been playing great despite all the injuries. We finished non-conference play 6-2-2 which all things considered isn't bad with the injury situations, but I wish that could've been a little bit better as we've yet to win on the road.

Now we get a 9 day layoff before the start of conference play next week. We open up against NAU at home who's off to a shockingly horrible start to the year at 0-4-3 with one non-conference match remaining against Southern Utah which I don't think they're going to win. It appears that it's a 2 horse race for the Big Sky title between the Griz and the Vandys who are 5-3-1 with one match remaining against UNLV. The good news for us though is we host Idaho in Missoula this year and the Big Sky tourney is in Missoula as well, and we are a sparkling 6-0 at home. That bodes well for us! Should be an exciting league slate!

Really wish the Griz could've gotten at least one win on the road against Fresno State, Air Force, and Wyoming. Wyoming has been underwhelming especially and Air Force's offense was crazy how off-target their shots were but they did probably have the best defense I've seen this year so the draw is understandable.

I will also be interested in seeing how EWU fares against Boise State this Sunday. They have some interesting results with a 5-3-1 record, as well.
I am too. What's funny is that they've also played 5 Mountain West teams, but they played the other 4 that we did not lol. So the only common opponent is Boise State. Eastern is having a surprisingly good year, but we get them in Missoula as well. We got a really favorable draw with the league schedule this year.

I've gone to all but one game this season (normally go to all of them every season but was unable to make the first because it was during a time when I was at work). I've been very impressed with how they've played, especially defensively and with all the changes they had to make after losing a number of key players due to injury (namely Dvorak, Parkhurst, and Schorr; the latter two had season-ending injuries, I'm not sure if Dvorak will be back this season).

With those injuries, it has truly shown how very deep a team Chris Citowicki has put together. Like with freshmen such as Hayley Bass and Carly Whalen showing they have made instant impacts right out of the gate (for instance Whalen scored a goal right a few minutes into the game against North Dakota and added an assist to help close out the scoring in a 4-0 win in that game). Transfers like Chloe Seelhoff and Jen Estes making impacts offensively in many games (Seelhoff has had a hot foot of late, she's scored three goals in the past two games). And Bayliss Flynn stepping up in Dvorak's absence and not allowing a single goal at home (although Boise State really tested her, she more than stood her ground and held the Broncos without a goal).

Griz gutted out a tough 1-0 road win at UNC yesterday to get to 2-0 in league play. This now sets up our toughest task to date which is the 2 game home stand against Idaho and Eastern. These are easily the other two contenders for the conference title, especially Idaho. These two played each other yesterday to a 2-2 draw where Eastern had a 2-0 second half lead before Idaho scored 2 goals in a span of a minute to get out of Cheney with a draw. This is a huge game on Thursday night and I encourage all of you in Missoula to try and make this game. It could be a preview of the Big Sky title match later this month.

Griz-EWU ends with a 1-1 draw. Third straight year it has been a tie.

Griz (9-2-3, 3-0-1 BSC) now with 10 points in the conference standings. Both Idaho-NAU and Sac-Northern Colorado tied at 1-1 in 2nd halves.

Idaho currently BSC #2 w/ 7 points
Sac State, NAU, EWU, and PSU all currently tied at #3 w/ 6 points
