Waded Cruzado Announces her Retirement

I know that has been your position along with others on here. And, as was mentioned in another post on here, that this person heard that some students did not like her. But, with 17,000 students, yes I am sure that there are some that do not like her. However, if you took a poll of MSU alumni, faculty, students and people in the Bozeman community I would venture 99 percent would say she has been a tremendous success.
On a personal level, I like Waded a lot. I actually considered going to work for her when I was coming out of college, largely based on how impressed I was with her and how much I enjoyed working with her on a task force when I was a college student. When I have run into her since then, she has somehow always picked me out of a crowd and made me feel like she went out of her way to remember me and talk to me. She makes everyone feel that way. So, to be clear, I like her a LOT on a personal level. Far more than I liked Royce, and I was representing the UM side of things.

But lets be real, there is a lot more going on that just "a few students do not like her." Here is a current list of ALL investigations of Montana higher education from the federal government.

If there is no merit at all to these complaints, they are closed quickly. The people that investigate these for the government are judged on their closing rate, and their ability to quickly separate good cases worthy of scrutiny from bad cases. Offices like the DOE get so many of these and never open an investigation or continue it. The federal government is not performing ALL of those investigations just because a few kids got mad and made false reports. That is extremely difficult to stomache, from a logical perspective.

Yes, it is not just a few students, but when you look at the enrollment and the number of semesters these cases span, the percentage of students is very small. Will be interesting to see the final decisions in these cases.

My opinion is that if you look at her overall record over 15 years, it will be a legacy of tremendous success.

DAAAAAAAMMMMMMNNNNNNN!!!!

Yeah, I think it's clear why waded "retired".

The logical error you've made is that every student who disliked her filed a complaint.

Her legacy in my opinion will be giving raises and extensions to coaches out on bail. That precedent was problematic because it meant any HC or assistant in any other sport who got arrested could not be fired or they could have a claim against the University and possibly BOR. They would definitely not want discovery in a public lawsuit, and requests about former coaches getting extended while out on bail would be highly relevant. Accordingly, I don't believe this was 100% her decision. That's my opinion; not stating a fact.

They don't let you read the actual complaints. I shared the entire grid that was available.

There was one article in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. No offense, but I don't put a lot of faith into the local media holding the school to account, so it is pretty scant with information.

In terms of percentage, I think it is still bad. For reference of similar size, MSU has an enrollment of roughly 16000 students. The Missoula public school system has 14,081. The UofM has an enrollment of 10,300.

MSU has 18 open investigations from the department of education. Missoula County's public school system has 3. The UofM has 3.

Combined, all of Missoula's public education has a total enrollment of 24,000+, with a total of 6 investigations. MSU alone has 18.

What's that, you ask? Maybe Missoula is just somehow really good at avoiding investigations (lol). So lets look at another random state on the list.

In terms of bigger schools, Michigan state has an enrollment of 50k students, and has 22 complaints. 51,000 students for Michigan. 16 complaints.

So, even as a ratio of complaints to students, there is not really any argument for MSU's being "not that bad." In fact, they have the same number of complaints as a school more than 3 times their size. So even though I find it a bit wild that you went to "Department of Education investigations to student ratio isn't that bad" as a defense, unfortunately even as a ratio MSU seems to have a real problem here. And that's without the black eye they gave themselves with the BoR and OCHE with those coaching extensions.

Its okay to admit that your University isn't perfect or has made bad decisions, and that Waded had an enormous amount of success that came at a cost of some ethics/morals. Hell, if I was her, maybe I would have made the same decisions to keep the good times rolling. I'm no saint. But lets not just pretend that everything is peachy keen and that all of this is totally normal based on a ratio.

Great post, and really highlights not only the problems at msu, but how they've managed to essentially cover them up and keep anyone from discussing them. There is little doubt waded had the media in her pocket, but at some point it just has to be too much for the Regents, who ultimately will have to clean up the mess she's leaving.

I didn’t say everything is perfect at all. I just gave an opinion that the legacy of her 15 year tenure will be one of tremendous success. Like I said, my opinion is if you took a survey of alumni, students, faculty and the Bozeman community 99 percent would agree.

I know some of you have a different opinion. Yes, those cases appear to be a lot. I guess we will not know the real story until the DOJ findings are released which could be years. One case goes back to 2016.

I know a number of people in Bozeman, including current and former MSU employees, who don't like her and never have.

Soooo, just more WAC then.

Got it.

Just out of curiosity, and boredom, I sniffed around the BOR Meeting Minutes, for July 25. All Executive Session, as it was annual review time for Cruzado, Bodnar, and Christian. Eighteen days later Waded announces her retirement. Hmm, waded you think happened behind those closed doors?🤔

During her tenure she has led MSU in tremendous growth in enrollment, academic success, and new and improved academic and athletic facilities. Her legacy will be a record of success.
It's easy to win the pot when the cards are stacked in your favor. I think my post clearly shows she was playing with a stacked deck. Heck with that hand delt to him, even Engstrom would have enjoyed similar success.
