Top 25 Returning FCS OL

Ridiculous. Didn’t they lose 3 starters to the portal? So whoever put this list together buys into the premise that their backups are better than their starters?
Was Reed hurt? The other two I get, but they must be basing reed on his 2022 season, oddly.

MSU lost 3 to Portal, but only 2 played and were starters.

My theory is that MSU's mostly running offense allows their linemen to be and get good, but they don't know how to pass block as well (because MSU isn't pass heavy). Also, MSU's 2 qb's were mobile and avoid sacks. That's to say that these guys aren't or weren't good.

I still think UM's two-deep depth was as good or better, but that assumed that our best would have been playing, which he wasn't. I don't think the Cat o-linemen would be nearly as good in the Griz O. I'm not trying to say I'm an o-line expert.

With those transfers, I think we are going to see the true impacts of MSU losing their great o line coach prior to last year. That coupled with the growing pains of trying to convert their offense to a post Mellott era with a new OC might have a huge impact. And without chambers, there is no way for Tommy to survive an entire season with their previous offense. Is there any way that Tommy can turn into a traditional qb that drops back 50% of the time? My guess is they will revert to running him like a battering ram if they lose a couple games and their back is against the wall.

It is definitely a different scheme and skillset. I don't claim to be an o-line expert either.

I will always wonder how much better our already damn good running game would have been with Mayginnes. His block deep into the sideline was really a season highlight as they were turning things around.

Looks like Reed was hurt, not replaced. I don't follow their individual o-line players nearly enough to have a good opinion about who is better. I do like ours, though. And Pawlak has me really excited for the future. Our o-line recruiting seems to have really spread wider in the portal with him around.

I’m loving our O-line more and more. If Bobby snags that CWU transfer we’re set up for success.
I keep watching and hoping for an announcement but nothing yet. Someone send him the article with all the amazing things the recent transfers said, stat!

Good questions. Does anyone know what the MSU offense was in spring ball and will likely be next fall? The Cat o-line obviously has some talent. While I liked Mellott better than Chambers, my view is that Chambers is going to be a big loss.

I watched some Cat games, but not most. Looking at the stats, Mellott seemed to be very inconsistent, but sometimes good, in his passing percentage. If some of the dumb and even obnoxious Cat fans from last season are watching, maybe they could weigh in. Or, maybe they are all so embarrassed by their stupid comments last year, that they are afraid to post. Maybe they could create a new posting name.

Yes I am a bobcat fan. Cats will have a top 1/2 OL and I don’t expect the cats to take a hit with Chambers gone (watch his stuff with Carolina to see what he was actually like). We return some highly talented OL (Marcus Wehr, Perkins, etc) and will probably continue to develop new talent. A key sign that the OL is fine is that we aren’t searching in the portal. For those who watched the playoff game vs NDSU you probably saw what the offense will look like (pretty solid air attack) and cats are getting their best receiver who couldn’t play last year.

Thanks. A top 1/2 of what? I think MSU will miss Chambers because he was terrific at scoring short yardage TD's and he was available when Mellott was hurt. Mellott was hurt both of the last 2 years. I don't doubt the MSU o-line will be fine or good. How do you know MSU was not looking for o-linemen in the Portal? The Cat air attack was very inconsistent last season, as I said earlier. Why would the passing O suddenly get consistent? Last year before the season, Cat fans were saying how much the MSU and Mellott throwing had improved. That wasn't accurate. Who's the receiver you refer to? Again, thanks.

I meant 1 or 2. I believe the cats will now utilize their incredible rb depth for goal line stuff and TD scoring. The cats would’ve gotten OL transfers if they needed them via portal. I believe Tommy has the arm but the OC limited his chances to prove it. I would watch the SDSU week 2 game or NDSU playoff game to see what he looked like (against the best 2 teams in the country) when he threw. Lonyatta Alexander Jr is the wr, he was at ASU/Washington previously.

Ok, if TM had the arm why didn’t the great QB whisperer who developed Josh Allen overrule his arrogant OC? I’m guessing the week 2 game film from SDSU might have looked different if Adam Bock had been playing and we all saw the results of the beat down in Missoula when he played against the second best team in the country.

That’s wehr’d, I’ve never heard of him.

And the question remains: do you really think he is the best OT in all of college football?
Based on PFF which seems to be accepted as a pretty accurate system, yes. On their website Wehr is 1 and Alt is 2 and no one seems to disagree that Alt was the best FBS OT. This next NFL draft will truly determine what scouts think but I’d say he’s legit. Very surprised you haven’t heard of him… I believe he grew in Billings and is now a 6 year player.

Pretty hard to overrule an OC who has established the best offense (based on statistics) in the FCS. Adam Bock is good but I don’t believe that he would’ve changed a whole lot overall. In cat gris almost all of Tommy’s throws were 20+ yards which is exactly what I’m saying the cats will go away from. The cats in week 2 and the playoff game relied on shorter passes with a mix then of deep balls, this was way more successful. Also how are the gris #2 if they allowed Tommy an avg. of 10.7 yards per carry?? Also Julius Davis avg around 7 so this is not just a schematic thing. Point is that the bobcats will move into a more effective and efficient passing scheme and will continue to have the best running offense in the FCS as we still have our top 4 rbs.

Appreciate you posting here with all of this information. Genuinely mean that. Thanks for having info and logical arguments for your points.

How do you feel about the coaching future without Housewright? To be honest with you, I didn't think as highly of either your OC or DC as a lot of people seemed to think. It is interesting to me to hear him thought of as someone "hard to overrule," though I absolutely acknowledge you know more than me about everything MSU related.

I've heard from a number of people that Mellott is going to be passing a lot more and passing well. Did you guys see good evidence of that in the spring? I find it hard to believe he will improve in that realm THAT much, but I keep hearing it from Bobcat friends.
