If you haven’t gone to a game, go support the UM Grizzly Hockey team. They are doing pretty good, even though it’s early in the season, but they are now Division 2

How can there be a University of Montana hockey team, yet alone Division Two, when it's not even recognized on gogriz.com?

It’s not funded by UM at all. However, Seth Bodner was at last nights game. There are no scholarships, we fans subsidize the team. But they are Griz hockey and they are DII

Oh, I forgot to ask. Is this a men's or a women's hockey team? We're not that far from Canada, you know.

ACHA DIV 2 Mens Hockey
They are 5-2 now. That’s not bad for a second year team.

My son skated at their prospect camp this weekend. There are definitely some legit collegiate level hockey players on that team.

There were several players that have skated for major juniors in Canada. I thought that made them inelligible to skate in the NCAA since they are considered to be professional players.

You’re never going to believe this, but apparently there was a cat fan in Missoula over the weekend watching his son skate at the UM prospect camp. Perhaps you crossed paths with him at the Western Washington tryouts earlier this month? I’d bet you’d get along splendidly considering you brought up the same specific eligibility question on eGriz that seatacat asked on the cat forum.

Sure I definitely know him well. :)

Do you have a point? Can you answer the question about the advanced junior players playing in the ACHA?

The ACHA is a club hockey organization, and I assume would not be governed by the NCAA.

The ACHA is American Collegiate Hockey Association. It has no affiliation with the NCAA, but is part of USA Hockey (nationwide governing body).

Yes, hockey is considered club level at some schools. The rival University of Providence in Great Falls, however, has players on scholarship, a full time paid head coach, is considered a varsity sport, and last year reached the DII ACHA nationals last year. Montana State also played as one of the 16 teams in the national tournament.

UM, U. of Providence, Montana Tech and MSU compete in the Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League (MWCHL) . All four are playing in the inaugural Montana Cup on Feb. 14th and 15th in Helena's Steed Arena.

The following week, Feb. 21-23, the ACHA will hold its west regionals in Westminster, Colorado. These are the 12 ranked teams in the region (ie. MT, UT, CO, AZ, CA, ID). The top two teams will receive an automatic berth in the National Championships. It will be in Maryland Heights, Missouri, Mar. 13-25.

Any chance of these events being streamed? Also, thanks for the info.
