McDowell back in the portal

No hiring manager in his/her right mind would refuse to hire the most-qualified candidate for a position simply because that person left the firm for another opportunity previously.
First, what you said is not accurate. Second, football is different than business. People change jobs all the time and have forever. Even today, most football players don’t change schools. If a hotshot lawyer left our firm for a competitor, it is highly unlikely that we would welcome him-her back. Bridges get burned.

I get what you're saying, and I agree with it in theory. I just don't think we will ever see the type of "commitment" we might want to see when we play at this level anymore. I don't think it's wise to have a blanket policy that once you enter the portal you can never come back if the goal is to win. Like most things in life, I think it should be case by case. If an All-American WR wanted to move up and then changed his mind, it's a lot different than if a third string WR entered the portal and changed his mind.

I guess I view it a lot like playing time. It's pretty easy to explain to a bench player why he doesn't get as much playing time as the dude two spots above him on the depth chart. I think it would be equally easy to explain why you allowed someone in the portal to come back but not another. This isn't really in reference to Clif, but just my general opinion.
Best to state this in advance: If you enter the portal(quit the team), there will be no coming back.

What if one were to commit to UM, then decommit to try to make it at a couple schools at higher level for a few years, and then want to recommit to UM? That would be totally fine, right?

How many seasons have we had a healthy starting QB for the entire year recently? There could be behind the scenes issues nobody knows, but I think it's a good thing to have options in a general sense. Seemed to work out pretty well last season . . .
Are you suggesting that they don't have options?

Both caused their own initial problems, but Crews had many forces working against him coming to UM. McDowell didn't.

I'd be happy to have Crews at UM, and felt that way all along. I can see the policy reasons for not allowing McDowell back. I too would have been fine with letting him correct his big goof up in the first few weeks, but, again, fine with Hauck's view.
This is exactly where I'm at. On both players.

Yep. I would love to see him back playing for the Griz in whatever capacity he can. I know, I know, not going to happen for myriad reasons, but he can play. And when it comes to players, I like the ones who can play.
I think if he wanted to come back and compete for the position, Bobby would have him. I, personally, don't think he will. He'll end up somewhere, and hopefully it's a good situation for him to succeed. He was the turning point in the Griz' season after the loss to NAU, and the fans loved him. We do have a butt load of depth right now at QB, so it's gonna be a different competition than last year.

Does anyone think Bobby wouldn't have welcomed Samori Toure back, had he had a change of heart before going to Nebraska? He's not telling a surefire first team FCS All-American WR to go pound sand.
Correct because it’s not really applicable here.
He would have said go kick rocks

if you were a hotshot lawyer who had been rejected by a firm at the begining of your career, would you consider joining the firm later in life?

so many questions...

What's this? The hotshot, later in life, letting select possible employers know he'd be willing to join the firm?
It's the FIRM that does the hiring, the seeking. The lawyer consents to any offer, or doesn't.
It's the TEAM that makes the offer, not the player telling the teams anything.

Well done, eGriz. Seven pages WITHOUT scat trolls. I'm guessing Chris re-focused the mods to get rid of the scat scat.👍
