BROOKYLN, N.Y. – When Jacob Wiley was a college freshman he entered the Montana Grizzlies basketball program with one piece of advice he always followed, “Set goals and never let someone tell you that you ‘can’t’,” as it reads in his bio on U-M’s website.

And he followed that advice all the way to the NBA, where he is now a member of the Brooklyn Nets. The 6’8″ forward is quiet the success story. At Montana he bounced around playing basketball and then ran track, where he competed in the 400-meter race.. A year later he moved on to Lewis and Clarke State to play basketball in the NAIA. Finally he settled in as a walk-on at Eastern Washington.

Big league hopes for a walk-on at a Big Sky school doesn’t seem like a recipe for success as young freshman come out of Power Five conference schools in droves. But Wiley worked tirelessly and last year at Eastern Washington he nearly averaged a double-double with 20.4 PPG and 9.1 rebounds per game.

An undrafted free agent, Wiley worked his way to the NBA Summer league and then a stint in the G-League before being called up to the big leagues. He has played four games with the Nets so far this season.
