Softball commit Tristin Achenbach

When she joins the Griz next year, we will probably have the most dominant 1-2 punch in the Big Sky. Her stats last year for B-C Conrad-Chotaue were just plain not fair. Now she's doing it at CMR for the defending state champs. Through the first six games of the year she's 4-0 in 4 starts. In 30 innings she's allowed only 1 run, off a solo homer, and she's struck out 66 batters with only 4 walks. In two games against Bozeman in one day, she faced 48 batters and struck out 38 of them. Sheer dominance. The one downside to this is fellow Griz commit Savanna Voyles is the SS for CMR and isn't getting much of a chance to work on her defensive skills. Can't wait for her and the other incoming Fr to join this team next year.

Really gratifying to me that when we have such great local talent, we have the program to accommodate them. Five years ago they both would have been heading out of state.

Like all our great wrestlers. At least our great tennis players get to stay in state, oh wait....

Those two girls can flat out play. Achenbach is fun to watch as she is effortless in her throwing, the Griz are getting two studs to add to their depth next year

The other two girls in the class are no slouches either. Middle infielder Alexis Knauss from Meridian Id through 20 games is batting .537 and slugging 1.164 with 8 homers. She also has 15 stolen bases. Jessica McAlister is a four year starter at catcher and 3B for the currently #12 nationally ranked La Cueva Bears of Albuquerque. She also hits for a high average and a lot of power.

Watched Alexis play. Solid player.

Achenbach just passed 200 k's in less then a 100 innings. That's over two k's per inning average. Can't wait to see the 1-2 punch her and Hood will bring. Wonder if any of our current pitchers are thinking of transferring?

She will red shirt and then be a freshman when hood is a junior.... great problem to have

That would be ideal. I wasn't sure if they RS in softball though. I know no current Griz have yet. I wonder if Stephenson and Young are contemplating transferring out given their lack of PT, especially Young and she's already transferred once. I imagine two of the other three Fr will RS also. One of em either has to play third (probably McAlister) or RF if Stites moves back to the infield and plays some third(probably anyone of the three. They've all got great bats with real good power, Knauss has real good speed too).

She just struck out 20 batters in her first AA State game. Yes 20. Insane.

My 11 year old struck out 3 of the 4 batters she faced last night! :D not insane, but hope she's good enough to be a lady Griz some day!

Love it! That's the good stuff. I have an 11 year old as well. She's playing her first year of travel ball (big girl ball as opposed to rec). First tourney this weekend. Not sure who is more excited :)

Hey, don't downplay it. That's a 75% k ratio. You need to start making that recruiting video and give Pink a heads up. She still has 7 more years to catch the attention of the Pac12 schoolsšŸ˜Š. Seriously though, hope she's stays with it and excels. That would be very exciting to have a child play for the Griz.

11 year old girls travel softball! Wow!!

Like most youth sports, this is the year some lucky 11 year old girls will make "the break" from lowly rec ball.

Of course travel involves all the costs of travel so little Sue down the street who's kind of interested in softball, very athletic and has enjoyed rec ball won't be making the trips. Her folks aren't as interested as Hooked on Griz to spend that kind of time and money traveling to 11 year old girls softball tourneys this summer. They like to camp and boat a bit.

Little Sally on the other hand is super into sports and Sally's in love with softball. Also a good athlete and destined to become even more so as she matures. Her folks don't have the kind of money to spend on travel trips...especially when she's only 11. She'll try lowly rec ball again this summer but is very disappointed to be losing some of her friends to travel ball and embarrassed to realize her parents can't afford what some of here friends can.

Anyone remember when kids used to go to the nearest softball or baseball field, pick some teams and play ball all day long? No umps...maybe not even 9 players per term, pitcher's hand for outs to save having a first baseman, no catcher's gear for the catcher. I know several guys who played pro baseball and one who played in the major leagues and outside of Little League this is the baseball that was played back in their day.

Sally and Sue would have joined this pick up game most days and maybe developed into Lady Griz players someday. In today's world Sally and Sue's softball careers end this weekend.

Ugh. Yes I feel bad for kids that can't because of a lack of money, or kids who can't because of a lack of parents, but does that mean other kids shouldn't? I hate to break it to you but travel softball/basketball/soccer/swimming/any sport starts much earlier than 11 and even earlier in larger cities. People complain about not having enough "Montana athletes" on our teams, and that will continue unless we step up our youth sports a bit. It's good for kids to get good competition, improve their skills and get to meet new friends across the State. It's also good for these young athletes to learn that they are probably not the best in the State or even the Country just because they can dominate their town league. Yes, it's harder in Montana to travel because distances are further and opportunities are limited but fees are usually also much less. I applaud the parents, grandparents, coaches and volunteers who put together these leagues and tourneys and then spend hours each week trying to help improve kids skills.

In your example those girls still have an opportunity to play rec leagues against many of the same kids that travel and will still have an opportunity to get to play college ball. In fact, today more than ever that is possible because of social media and the ability to hear about kids in every corner of the world. Even 10-15 years ago kids had to attend expensive camps to get noticed and if you didn't do that chances are you were going to have a hard time getting recruited.
