2017 Big Sky All-Conference Teams announced...

OGDEN, Utah (November 21, 2017) – The Big Sky Conference has three teams competing in postseason play, as it has announced its Football All-Conference team and individual award winners for 2017.

The All-Conference teams and individual award winners were selected by the 13 league head coaches and released by the league office Tuesday.

UC Davis junior wide receiver Keelan Doss was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player. Doss, a candidate for the Walter Payton Award, finished the regular season as the top wide receiver in the nation among all Division I FBS and FCS players in receiving yards (1,499), receiving yards per game (136.3) and receptions per game (10.5).

Weber State senior cornerback Taron Johnson was voted as the Defensive Most Valuable Player. Johnson, the only unanimous selection to the defensive first team, helped lead the Wildcats to a share of the Big Sky title in his final season. He finished the regular season with 30 tackles, 3.0 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks, 10 passes defended, and three interceptions for a total of 59 yards.

Additional top honors went to Aggie sophomore quarterback Jake Maier for Newcomer of the Year. The sophomore finished his season ranked second in the FCS in completion percentage (.686), third in passing yards (3,669) and fifth in passing yards per game (333.5).

Freshman of the Year honors went to double threat Troy Andersen, who plays running back and linebacker for Montana State. He notched 515 rushing yards to go along with five touchdowns on the ground and a touchdown reception. On defense he had nine tackles and a sack for the Bobcats.

Southern Utah outside linebacker Michael Needham and North Dakota running back John Santiago were the only three-time First-Team All-Big Sky honorees.

Northern Arizona quarterback Case Cookus and Weber State tight end Andrew Vollert were named two-time first team honorees. Vollert was also the only offensive player voted as a unanimous First Team selection. Both players will lead their teams in the FCS Playoffs.

Co-conference champion Weber State placed eight players on the first team. Idaho State, Northern Arizona and Southern Utah all had four players receive first team honors. In all, 11 of the 13 conferences teams had at least one player selected to the First Team.

Weber State led all schools with 16 honorees on the three teams, followed by Southern Utah (12), Eastern Washington (10), Sacramento State (10), and Northern Arizona (9).

The Big Sky All-Conference team is selected by the Big Sky’s head football coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. The conference’s Coach of the Year award will be announced on Wednesday.

I think Gresch should have been freshman player of the year. He clearly did more for his team than any other freshman in the conference/ likely country. Josh Buss should be 1st team line-backer.

How is Connor Strahm not on any of these lists. You have to be kidding me.

Edit....missed him initially on the 3rd team.

 just noticed that too, unbelievable

I missed him on the 3rd team. Still think he should be higher.
I think he shouldn’t have gotten in trouble and missed games.

Jesse Sims not getting a nod at all is a huge snub. Buss definitely deserved first team. Andersen and Gresch were so close, probably was hard to choose. Gresch deserved it, but doesn't mean Troy didn't deserve it.

One thing very interesting is, the Cats led the league in rushing, yet didn't have a single-all conference running back or Murray get voted on to the team. That's a weird dynamic. LaSane probably would have made it though if he didn't miss four games.

It’s amazing how far the Griz have fallen. 1 player making first team, none on second team O or even third team O. The rest on second team D and third team D. 6 players total with one first team. Goes to show the amount of respect given and the success of Stitt coaches teams.

The Griz had the #10 offense in the entire country. This is a Big Sky Conference problem. The way they pick these teams is very questionable because the popular coaches have more sway. Coaches hating Stitt should have no impact on whether or not Gresch Jensen is Freshman of the Year, for example.

I'm not very good at math, but that's more than six. I agree, the Griz used to have 15-20 players on this list every year, but, that was BEFORE the addition of four more teams to this insanely sized conference. I PROMISE you, even with a new head coach, there isn't going to be 20-plus Griz players on this list every single year. It's not the way this conference is anymore.

Why not George? Weber has 16 and they didn't dominate the conference like the Griz used to?

I haven’t followed you guys very closely, but had no idea David Reese was so good.

All of that not-withstanding, Gresch Jensen was the best freshman in the big sky.

No question.

Future 1st Team BSC, League MVP, and FCS All-American. Period.

No doubt Jensen is a really good freshman quarterback, and Troy Anderson is a complete beastman.

Both would be well deserving, I think Choates probably is a little better sales man with his fellow Conf coaches. That was evidenced last year with Murray winning over Jerry Louis McGee

This is the same conference that thought Cowser was better than Holmes.

The politics are ridiculous.

No, but they had A GREAT SEASON THIS YEAR. Why would Weber's past have anything to do with how the kids on this list played this season. And 16 is only four more players than the Griz had. I don't buy the hate Stitt argument as to why the Griz got hosed on a few selections either. Many people, including posters on this board, would have you believe Choate is one of the darling coaches of the Big Sky, and everybody loves him. And maybe that's true. It very well could be. Well, the Cats only had seven players selected, and just like the Griz, only one first-teamer.
