Don't you mean, "millennials are busy picking up the tab for baby boomers who have set this country back so far in debt they'll never get out"?

Is this just a millennial thing though? I've read articles where they say millennials supposedly spend their money on experiences over material goods. Shouldn't this count?

There a lot of factors here. Increasing price inequality combined with increasing costs to attend games does not make for a frugal experience. To increase revenue, games that are on TV (which is most for any school nowadays) means tons of TV timeouts which kills the buzz. Overpriced gas station food. Increased security measures adds time and hassle to getting into the game.

Millennials earn roughly 20% less than Boomers did at the same stage in their life, and have about half as much net wealth. Plus the average monthly student loan payment for someone aged 20 to 30 years is $351 per month. The average salary for millennials is $35,000. Using those averages, your average college graduate millennial spends over 12% of their income on student loan debt.

So yes, there are going to be a lot of industries hurt by this frugal generation.

Watched part of a MAC game on ESPN2 the other night. Northern Il vs. W. Michigan I. They showed one side of the stadium a few times. It had the band....and virtually no one else! Couldn't believe it. Didn't ever really pan the other side but what a dismal crowd. Listed at 7,732 (28,000 capacity).....there were about 200 on that one side. Northern won and now sits atop the MAC West Division with an 8 - 3 overall record and 6 - 1 conference record. W. Michigan sits at 6 - 5 and 4 - 3. This was a big game in the MAC! Haven't studied BSC attendances this year but can't imagine anyone in our league has such poor attendance.

Went to Lady Griz last night vs. Kentucky. Crowd announced at 2,800+ and seemed easily that many there. Boisterous and knowledgeable as always...but another observation......scanned the lower east level (700+ fans?) and would say the average age of that group of fans was 55+ (that's probably low!). Where will Lady Griz attendance be down the road in a few years? Same thing with even Griz FB attendance which has started to dwindle some the past couple of years. My 82 year old Dad has season tickets and lives in Billings. He's a 25+ years season ticket holder and a die hard Griz fan but only made 2 home games this year. Probably others just like him with similar passion....but not quite as much energy to get to games.

That was another thing I was going to mention as well. Aging football fans is going to be a problem.

You also have the Gen X and millennial parents raising kids to avoid football like the plague because of the perceived danger the game poses, especially to your brain. I have a 18 month old son and my wife, even before he was born, was very vocal about him not playing football ever. Schools across the country are having a hard time getting enough guys to come out and field a squad.

It will be interesting where football goes in the next 5 to 10 years. It needs to be made safer or parents aren't going to let their kids play. You also can't really make it more boring by making it safer, else you alienate the fans who come to see guys get crushed, and who hate to see penalty after penalty because a hit was too violent. Sprinkle in the kneeling controversy and it is a bad time for football right now, at all levels.

It's a problem of a better product being produced at home, along with higher and higher ticket prices for an experience that doesn't always match that price (i.e. 50 bucks or more for nosebleed seats), and recent graduates dealing with all the modern issues of gong to a football game (which you laid out) while during their undergrad. So the stupid shenanigans that most would have gotten away with 30 years earlier doesn't fly anymore. It takes away some of the good memories that a lot of older people have that keep them coming to football games. If recent grads don't have that to draw on, it's a problem. They won't keep spending for an experience that doesn't quite live up to the hype.

Important to remember a thing called inflation here. You know, the thing that makes it so damn expensive to live in California or Seattle vs Montana? So, boomers, I really don't give a shit if you made $2.90 an hour in 1975 right out of high school, because that's the equivalent of 10 bucks an hour in today's money.

Gonna be few people in this thread who will suggest that most americans shouldn't pursue higher ed, but the ceiling there for damn near everyone without a college degree in the modern world is working at Kwikway or McDonald's.

And yet, most of this generation will still be lumped in with the shitty "yoga and avocado toast" section of millennials, the select few who can still buy whatever shit they want and are "so broke" when they cant afford spotify premium.

You're obviously talking about something here that you haven't researched, and/or lack the life experience to know. I know many people in the Missoula area alone that make twice as much, or more, than the average attorney in this town working in the skilled to highly-skilled trades. Not to mention business start-ups that were, and continue to be successful. All you need is to be driven and somewhat intelligent. What you said is nothing more than a myth.

I'm not advocating for or against a college degree. Just pointing out the blatant inaccuracy of that statement.

Some of us (like the millennials) have been voting for these shit bags for a lot less time. Blaming millennials for problems nowadays is naive and ignorant at best. We're working our asses off but we don't accumulate wealth due to a number of things.

Agreed. You old coots are the damn problem, guess what you ignorant old bastards- YOU STARTED THE PARTICIPATION TROPHY CRAP!!!

Your generation has voted for corrupt politicians hell bent on making the US the world police, keeping this country in a constant state of war since the mid 90's.

Housing prices and college tuition has SKYROCKETED, all the while the value of our dollar has plummeted. I consider myself lucky that my savings account pays 1.25% (close to 3% per year short of BASIC INFLATION).

Kind of hard to afford going to a football game when paying $500+ monthly in student loans (I don't have any thankfully, was smart enough to go right to work and actually have a decent paying job) and fuel costs over $3 per gallon...idiots

Seriously. 85% of Americans want a balanced budget. The other 15% are politicians.

I make "ok" $ for someone under 30 years old because I've worked my ass off....nowhere near enough to buy a house, I drive a '99 4Runner, don't eat out etc. I am not comfortable by any means.

The rant is because I have empathy for other human beings, something that most of the older generation doesn't seem to have.

And no, I didn't vote for Hilary. I am a libertarian, both dems and repubs are crooked lying thieving scumbags for the most part.

Agreed. Also, there is a growing number of people (especially in Missoula) who flat out just don't like football and the "culture" around football. At any level. I have talked to folks who see football as a stereotypical example of "jock culture", and they try to distance themselves from that "culture." While they may have some merit, I believe they are totally missing the big picture. Just a few years ago the Griz had a Rhodes Scholarship finalist on their team. Did you hear a lot of praise by those "anti" football? No, because they are already deeply entrenched in their distaste for football and do not support ANY aspect of football. In the state of Montana this is starting in Missoula, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it spread.

Definitely will be interesting to see how football is viewed in the next 10 years.

Problem is you are all like everyone else before you. You think you have everything figured and know all the answers. Unfortunately, so did we. We you get in your thirties you will understand you didn't know squat in your twenties. When you get to your fourtys you will realize how stupid you were in your twenties. It goes on and on then you die. You are not special and don't have any special insight that anyone else hasn't experienced.

Never said nor implied that I was special.

Millenials are being saddled with debt from the generations preceding us, with cost of living expenses higher than they have been since close to the 30's with inflation, yet expected to just have $ falling out of our pockets.
