2017 FCS Playoff At Large Eligibility (Version 1)

I compiled a list of FCS teams still capable of reaching 7 Division 1 wins this season. Although 7 wins is no longer the official plateau for at-large selection, it is highly unlikely a 6-5 team will be selected. The list is for reference only, and is not meant to predict the probability of the teams selected. It will be updated weekly, as teams are eliminated, or teams secure their conference auto-bid.

Teams are organized by conference, although Ivy League teams are not included since their conference does not participate in the FCS playoffs. MEAC teams are listed since their second place team could still theoretically receive a playoff berth; only Alcorn State from the SWAC is listed, since all other teams are eliminated, or have schedule conflicts.

Teams preceded by an asterisk (*) have already reached 7 Division 1 wins; those listed in bold need to win all remaining games to reach 7 Division I wins.

YSU - sans the SDSU win, they’ve got nothing. But you’ll hear arguments about their “quality losses”.

why does the pioneer league have to go to 8 wins? no biggie, this was a lot of work to put together so to keep it consistent with your first sentence.............

I count 60 teams possible at this point. Will be fun to keep this updated every week. Griz need to play week to week and take care of business!

Montana state would fit nicely in the MVFC.

All this playoff talk kills me. If we don't beat Weber and/or NAU we don't belong in the playoffs!

They need 8 total wins to reach 7 Division 1 wins, because they have a win over a lower division school. I neglected to make that clear in the first iteration of this report, and will create a mechanism to indicate this in future versions.

I think Weber only needs to finish 2-2 not 3-1, correct?
Weber State's first win was against NAIA Montana-Western, so they currently sit at 4 Division 1 wins. With 4 games remaining, they must win 3 to hit 7 Division 1 wins.

True that, but you have to admit that this is fun!

True, and we would likely be a bubble team, just on the outside, looking in.

Ten automatic bids- BSC/Big South/Colonial/Missouri Valley/Northeast/Ohio Valley/Patriot/Pioneer/Southern/Southland
SWAC doesn't participate in playoffs
Pioneer one will qualify...same with Patriot and Big South
Bulk of at large will come from Big Sky/ Missouri Valley/ Southland

True about the SWAC, speaking practically ... they would need to have three FCS-competitive teams because the two top play in their championship and are therefore ineligible. But, in theory, that third competitive team could get an at-large playoff bid. (Probably not gonna happen in our life-time  .)

Easier for the MEAC ... they only need two FCS-competitive teams. Their regular-season champion plays in the HBCU Celebration Bowl, but a second team could get an at-large bid. That, in fact, happened last year.

SWAC doesn't get an auto-bid, and both Grambling and Southern are ineligible, but they could in theory get an at large bid into the playoffs.
